The Department of Health and Human and nearby divisions under its course, work to secure, and care for general society. By forestalling plagues, securing against ecological perils, advancing solid practices, gathering measurable information, and numerous different assets, general wellbeing guarantees that the legislature maintains the requirements of its residents. General wellbeing has a longstanding history that has developed after some time to meet the regularly evolving condition, the development of innovation and the developing populace. Though general wellbeing keeps up the requirements of the populace everywhere, network wellbeing focuses on the vulnerabilities and requests of specific network. Assets The neighborhood general wellbeing divisions in this authorsââ¬â¢ provincial region incorporates seven districts. Administrations incorporate clinical help, network wellbeing, instructive occasions, youth programs, the study of disease transmission reconnaissance, home wellbeing, arranging and catastrophe readiness, and school wellbeing (Lincoln Trial District Health Department, 2014). All the more explicitly, by offering administrations, for example, disease screening, WIC programs, pain advising, and numerous others, the general wellbeing division underpins the objective of keeping up the prosperity of people in general. The Department of Health and Human assets is the national general wellbeing administrative division that keeps up general wellbeing. ââ¬Å"The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is the United States governmentââ¬â¢s head organization for ensuring the strength everything being equal and offering fundamental human types of assistance, particularly for the individuals who are least ready to help themselvesâ⬠(U.S.à Department of Health and Human Services, 2014, para. 1). The HHS works with nearby and state wellbeing divisions to find financing, offer types of assistance, gather information, and advance science through examination to guarantee that constituents of America have the social, mental, and physical clinical needs paying little heed to their social standing. History of Public Health ââ¬Å"The crucial general wellbeing has its foundations in the mid-nineteenth century, when doctors, lodging reformers, advocates for poor people, and researchers prepared in new strategies of science and structural building met up to battle issues becoming out of urbanization, industrialization, and huge scope migration. This alliance changed the nationââ¬â¢s economy and condition, and, thusly, its wellbeing. High demise rates and epidemic had since quite a while ago influenced rich and poor networks alikeâ⬠(Fairchild, Rosner, Colgrove, Bayer, and Fried, 2010, p. 54). The article depicts Americaââ¬â¢s wellbeing weakening by the mid-nineteenth century from episodes, for example, smallpox, cholera, typhoid, yellow fever, and different intestinal ailments. The poor were frequently accused for these scourges, in this way the split between social classes developed. In 1940, the American Public Health Association redressed a code of administrations that general wellbeing divisions were to give. They were: ââ¬Å"collecting information on indispensable measurements; controlling transferable ailments through strategies, for example, flare-up examinations; contact following; accomplice notices, and (once in a while) disconnection and isolate; guaranteeing ecological sanitation; giving lab administrations to the determination of sicknesses by private specialists, medical clinics, and different clinicians; offering maternal, newborn child, and kid wellbeing administrations; and giving educationâ⬠(Fairchild, Rosner, Colgrove, Bayer, and Fried, 2010, p. 57). Following this period, general wellbeing has encountered change and change that proceeds right up 'til the present time. From social medication to current troubling monetary conditions, general wellbeing, albeit profoundly established in prosperity and practices that help it, despite everything battles between social requests, political restriction, and corporate specifications. General wellbeing continues keeping up its fundamental beliefs. Regardless of what alterations general wellbeing may experience, evaluation, strategy advancement and confirmation keep on serving the oppressed or those out of luck. Differenceà Between Public and Community Health As per Stanhope and Lancaster (2012), ââ¬Å"Public wellbeing has been characterized and depicts as a framework and social undertaking; a calling; an assortment of strategies, information, and methods; legislative wellbeing administrations, particularly clinical consideration for poor people and underserved; and the wellbeing status of the publicâ⬠(p. 243). In that capacity, general wellbeing includes the general population on a national or worldwide level by ensuring the psychological, physical, and social prosperity of people. For example, the World Health Organization (WHO) was presented on April 7, 1948. ââ¬Å"The center elements of WHO are as per the following: â⬠¢providing authority on issues basic to wellbeing and participating in associations where joint activity is required; â⬠¢shaping the examination plan and invigorating the age, interpretation and scattering of significant information; â⬠¢setting standards and guidelines and advancing and checking their usage; â⬠¢articulating moral and proof based approach choices; â⬠¢providing specialized help, catalyzing change, and building practical institutional limit; and â⬠¢monitoring the wellbeing circumstance and surveying wellbeing trendsâ⬠(World Health Organization, 2014, para. 1) Network wellbeing under the umbrella of general wellbeing focuses on a populace in a specific region. As per Stanhope and Lancaster (2008), the WHO characterizes network as, ââ¬Å"A people group is a social gathering controlled by geographic limits, basic qualities and interestsâ⬠(p. 342). Network wellbeing concentrates its endeavors of evaluation, strategy improvement, and affirmation on nearby populace, of which have changed requirements and vulnerabilities. Assets for a particular network might be unique in relation to assets for another network, so the center elements of network wellbeing must be custom fitted to fit every individual zone. All in all, general wellbeing guarantees the psychological, physical, and social government assistance of which individuals are entitled. Network wellbeing focuses its endeavors on the individuals of a topographical region. As the requirements of the region and a network change, general wellbeing must keep up their administrations to fulfill needs. Americans have the open door through general wellbeing to utilize the assets available to them to continue a solid way of life. Francis Burton Harrisons strategy of fascination was additionally presented during this time.â [1]â Crafted by del Pilar, Jacinto and Pardo de Tavera were rich wellsprings of mental hypotheses despite the fact that they were disseminators and not therapists. Indeed, even Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo referenced the term Psicologos del verbo Tagalog in his discourse. They were not title holders in Psychology however they despite everything have this inborn nature. The English language and the American arrangement of Education were the instruments utilized. During the twenties American brain science instructors were supplanted by Filipinos.â [2]â The Philippine issue with uncritical importation of Americans Psychological models tested a portion of the Filipinos. The principal endeavor was finished by Sinsiforo Padilla who took over from Alonzos position as a director at the University of the Philippines. He returned to the Philippines during the poor turmoil under Hukbalahap with Luis Taruc, as the head. During that time, the Department of Psychology in the University of the Philippines was a piece of the College of Education. It was then Lagmays first move to move it to the College of Liberal Arts by changing the instructive perspective to an increasingly logical premise of direction. Test Psychology is presently an indispensable piece of the undergrad educational program in Philippine schools and it was a direct result of him. The U.P Department of Psychology was seen as conduct direction structure the 50s up to mid 70s. His understudies proceeded with some astounding and huge examinations in the field.â [4]â The History and Lines of Filiations in Philippine Psychological Thought Brain research Academic This part of brain research turned out to be a piece of college educational plan under Francisco Benitez during 1922. It was first instructed in the University of the Philippines as a piece of the training educational plan. This is the period wherein a few investigations in brain research, for example, Experimental Psychology, Educational Psychology and Psychology of Advice Giving were presented. It was said that the Western Psychology originally entered the UP framework however it was spread broadly in UST (University of Sto. Tomas) and University of San Carlos in Cebu. During the time of 1954, Joseph Goertz set up the Department of Psychology and utilized English as the mode of educating. Then again, amidst its development in Manila this control was additionally presented as a course in the University of St. Louis in Cordillera. It was encouraged by Fr. Evarist Louis an evangelist priest.â [5]â Brain research Academic Philosophy Be that as it may, Psychology-Academic Philosophy was set up first at University of Sto. Tomas by Spaniards and improved by the Jesuits. This perspective was more established than the viewpoint referenced previously. It began and established in numerous colleges like UST (University of Sto. Tomas) and other Spanish organizations like San Ignacio and San Jose. In such organizations the clinical and theory courses began. The thoughts and set up accounts on that time apparently was identified with Psychology. In a more profound investigation those can contain the lifestyle previously. It incorporates the language , how the indio see the idea of self ,its reactions and the exercises of the antiquated human advancement. Ethnic Psychology The third part of Psychology known as Ethnic Psychology. It begins from the Filipinos and through the impact of different nations. It isn't just more seasoned yet additionally much confused contrasted with the past perspectives. It has numerous strands to be snared and one of those is simply the brain research that originated from the Filipinos themselves. An indigenous brain research that is possessed or affected by different nations. The language is a cone crediting factor particularly those exercises that can show the aggregate encounters of Filipinos. Crafted by Jose Rizal and Isabelo de los Reyes were comprised of Filipino Psychology and it was extraordinarily associated with the Psycho-Medical Psychology of our forefathers.â [6]â Social Psychology The investigation of Social Psychology is characterized as an orderly investigation of the nature and reasons for human social conduct. Principally, its anxiety is about human social conduct. It incorporates a great deal of issues with respect to the people sway on others, the procedures of social connection and the relationship that exist between people in the general public. She offered me a definition to response the inquiry . I love the Metro system in Madrid. Puts the T to shame. 9. I love the Starbucks employee who would always give me free muffins just because Im Taiwanese and I try to (somewhat) speak Spanish. 8. I love the random Chinese conversations that I have on the Metro with Chinese emigrants to the city. 7. I love the 75 degree afternoons. 6. I love the 18 year old drinking age. And the fact that wine in Spain is not just an excuse for people to get wasted. 5. I love how lunch is at 2, and dinner is at 9. 4. I love how the stores are always open at night. 3. I love Spanish food. Paella. Cocido. Fried artichokes. 2. I love my Spanish family in Madrid. 1. I love Madrid just because of the way it is. My Last Two Weeks in Spain, and Thoughts: Doing a study abroad is kind of like matchmaking. For one month (or semesters in a real study abroad), youre paired with a family, a city, and an environment that you have little to no idea about. During the remainder of your time there, you figure out when the Metro comes, you find out which shop has the best churros con chocolate, and slowly, paso a paso, you adjust to the lifestyle. I spent the eleven days between my last final and January 3 in Taiwan and then right after, I came back to MIT in anticipation to leave for Spain (after spending one night in my dorm). I must admit, on the night of January 3 (I left for Spain on January 4), I had no idea what I should expect about my stay in Spain. On a whim, I youtubed Madrid and started looking at the videos that came up trying to formulate some expectations about the city that I would be spending a month in. Most of the videos showed some elegant parks (like Parque del Buen Retiro Madrids most famous park), forbidding edifices (like Palacio Real the largest palace in Europe), or distinguished museums (like Museo del Prado best known for its collection of paintings) but of course, I knew what none of them were called at that time. I could hardly contain my excitement as I stepped off the airplane at Amsterdam. For me, this was my first time in Europe, and I was eager to see what Europe was like (well, okay, the airport is not exactly the best representation of Europe =p). I browsed the duty-free shops, and thought about Spain and also the Spanish class I would be taking (!! Dont forget that it wasnt a complete 100% vacation =p). For me, I havent done Spanish classes since the first semester of senior year, and to be honest, my high school Spanish class wasnt of the greatest calibre either. What would I think about the Spanish instruction at MIT? What would 4 weeks of intensive language classes be like? When we (me and another girl from my program that I met on the airplane) finally got to Madrid, we could not find our contact (who was supposed to give us directions on getting to our respective houses), so we wandered in the airport reception hall for an hour or so (we eventually ended up finding him, though). After the instructions and whatnot, I finally set off towards my house. The house wasnt hard to find (once you figure out how Spanish addresses are written for example: C/ Santa MarÃa 67 4 Izq would mean 67, Santa Maria St., Fourth Floor on the Left also! in Spain, what we consider to be the first floor is actually called planta baja (ground floor) and their primera planta (first floor) is actually our second floor). With some nervousness, I rung the doorbell to the apartment and the caretaker came and asked me what I wanted. With (really bad) Spanish, I explained who I was looking for, and he directed me upstairs. Now, with A LOT MORE nervousness, I rung the doorbell to the house, and waited for a response. For ten minutes, no one responded, and I started wondering whether I had the wrong address. After triple-checking, I was completely sure that I was right, and my host was just not at home. Great. I have a 35-pound suitcase with me and I wasnt going to sit here waiting the whole night for him to come back! I have to drop off my suitcase here and then come back later, once I know what the deal is with my host. Then the problem came. How the heck am I supposed to explain that I need to drop off my suitcase here and I will come back at night to the caretaker of the apartment?! (Remember, at this point, my Spanish was atrocious from lack of practice). I started formulating a draft of what I was going to say (which resembled more like a string of disconnected words rather than coherent sentences) to the caretaker, and proceeded downstairs. After gesturing a lot (I didnt know what the word for luggage was), the caretaker somewhat understood my dilemma, and told me that he would only hold on to my luggage until 9, when he got off work (I dont know how I understood all this, with my severely limited language skills in the beginning. But then again, during my month in Spain, I discovered that I had a knack of getting the big picture of what someone is saying, even though I might not understand every word =p). I found my profesor for the course, Ricardo, afterwards and asked him for help. He called my host, and (after a 30-minute discussion), found out that my host wouldnt be able to take me until next Monday (this was Saturday night) because the agency didnt tell him that I would be coming this early. Thus, I ended up spending two nights in Ricardos flat (which didnt have hot water nor heating) with another student who was also homeless. Despite the initial mishaps, I successfully moved in to my hosts house on Monday night. With a cheerful grin, he introduced himself as Arturo and showed me my room, in his tiny (but typical) Spanish flat. Espero que te gustes el pollo! (I hope you like chicken!) with that, he disappeared into his kitchen, and emerged carrying out some stewed chicken that he had prepared for me. With that, my journey in Spain began. Over the next month, I would come to know his family, his interests, and basically his life. Having grown up completely in Madrid, Arturo had only left the country a handful of times. However, boasting a CD collection in the scale of thousands, he claims that he had traveled the world through music. His grandmother, who is currently 92 and had lived through World War I, World War II, and the Spanish Civil War, still hums to the rhythm of Iberian waltzes that she heard as a young woman. His cousin (who lives with his grandmother, in another apartment apart from Arturo) is young, energetic, has two kids, and makes the best pollo con cebollas for your life. Each night, after Arturo came home from his Zen meditation at 10:30, we would have dinner in his small flat, which often consisted of rice stewed with various vegetables, some meats, chorizos, mixed salad (which sounds and is really simple, but the way he makes it tastes amazing with olive oil and salt), raisins and wine. Yes, always, raisins and wine. Over dinner (which always somehow tend to last 2 hours), we would talk about everything, from his job (telephone operator and volunteer for civil rights) to Spanish politics (as my vocabulary got progressively better). As the days progressed, I started really relishing these nights we spent together, just talking about life over a food. Its so down-to-earth, so family-like, soSpanish. Taking a language class abroad is also an experience in itself. The IAP Spanish II class meets everyday from 10 AM to 1 PM, and we go over a semesters worth of material in 4 weeks. This equals roughly two chapters in the textbook every week, about twenty vocabulary words everyday, and a major exam every Friday. Of course, I am still on Pass/No Record, so there goes my motivation. But, being entirely immersed in Spain does help though I think I learned more about vocabulary and general speaking skills from talking to Arturo and going to different restaurants than from the class itself. It is really neat that I would be learning the vocabulary for relationships in class, and I would be using the same vocabulary to talk to Arturo about his social life the same night. =p But then again, like matchmaking, not everyone was completely happy about their matches. I feel, in a large part, that the satisfaction of this study-abroad was based, significantly, by peoples happiness with their host families. There were host families who did not have hot water there were families who never talked to their host students and there were host families who posted long list of rules that the students had to follow. I was really fortunate to have found a family that I established a lasting connection with, a house that I can call home in Spain. :) On my way to the Madrid airport yesterday, I unfolded the Metro map that I received on my very first day in Madrid. Its still the same map, but is now wrinkled and crinkly from all the creases of travel. Gazing at the names of the subway stops, I marvel at how much Ive gotten to known Madrid. I know I am going to miss Spain. Well, this had been an amazing IAP, and its back to the firehose after Reg Day tomorrow! (Next IAP Preview: Im hoping to take D-Lab next term (Fall 2008), which would most probably involve a project overseas next IAP, so perhaps Ill be gone from MIT my sophomore IAP as well! Hmmm. =p) Mikehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16549845635989615112noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3593062285409250006.post-23376356671294390052020-05-23T15:30:00.001-07:002020-05-23T15:30:02.714-07:00Red Flag Laws Definition Red flag laws are gun violence prevention laws that allow courts to order the temporary confiscation of firearms from persons deemed to pose a risk to others or themselves. Key Takeaways: Red Flag Laws Red flag laws are state gun violence prevention laws which allow police to confiscate firearms from persons deemed by a court to pose a risk to others or themselves. As of August 2019, 17 states and the District of Columbia had enacted red flag laws. After deadly mass shootings in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, President Trump and a bipartisan group of Congress members have indicated their support for red flag laws. Along with gun control proposals, such as universal gun-buyer background checks, raised in the aftermath of shootings like those in Sandy Hook, Parkland, El Paso, and Dayton, demands to enact ââ¬Å"red flagâ⬠laws have become common. As of August 2019, 17 states and the District of Columbia had enacted red flag laws. Red Flag Law Definition and Mechanics Red flag laws permit police or family members to ask a state court to order the temporary removal of all firearms from persons believed to present a danger to others or themselves. In deciding to issue such orders, known variously as Extreme Risk Protection Orders (ERPOs) or Gun Violence Restraining Orders (GVROs), the courts consider the past actions and statementsââ¬âincluding those posted on social media outletsââ¬âmade by the gun owner in question. If the court decides to issue the order, the gun owner must surrender all firearms to the police for a specified period of time. In addition, the person named in the order is banned from buying or selling guns during that period. Refusing to fully comply with a red flag protective order is a criminal offense. Guns seized under the order are returned to the owner after a set period of time unless that period is extended by the court. Examples of evidence required by the courts to justify granting gun confiscation orders include: A recent act or threat of violence (involving a firearm or not)Evidence of serious mental illnessHistory of domestic violenceReckless use of a firearmEvidence of substance abuse or alcoholismSworn testimony by witnesses The specific legal provisions of red flag laws and how they are enforced vary from state to state. Are Red Flag Laws Effective? Connecticut was one of the first states to enact a red flag law in 1999. According to a 2016 study published in the journal of Law and Contemporary Problems, the 762 gun removals under Connecticuts ââ¬Å"risk warrantâ⬠law from October 1999 through June 2013 resulted in one suicide prevented for every ten to eleven gun seizures executed. The study concluded that ââ¬Å"enacting and implementing laws like Connecticutââ¬â¢s civil risk warrant statute in other states could significantly mitigate the risk posed by that small proportion of legal gun owners who, at times, may pose a significant danger to themselves or others.â⬠Are Red Flag Laws Constitutional? Many gun-rights advocates say that red flag laws infringe on gun ownersââ¬â¢ Second Amendment right to ââ¬Å"keep and bear arms,â⬠as well as their right to due process of law as provided by the U.S. Constitution. Guns, they argue, are personal property, and both the Fifth and 14th Amendments specifically provide that the governmentââ¬âincluding the courts and policeââ¬âmay not deprive citizens of property without due process of law. The argument is based on the fact that the court hearings held to decide if an individual poses a threat are held ex parte, meaning that the person whose guns might be temporarily confiscated is not present at the hearing. This, critics say, violates the Sixth Amendmentââ¬â¢s guarantee of the right of accused persons to a face-to-face confrontation with witnesses against them.à However, hearings on all types of restraining and protective orders are typically held ex parte out of concern for the safety of the complainant and witnesses.à Red Flag Law Debate A Washington Post-ABC News poll conducted in April 2018 found that 85% of registered voters nationwide support laws that would ââ¬Å"allow the police to take guns away from people who have been found by a judge to be a danger to themselves or others.â⬠States with red flag laws have reported similar levels of public support for the legislation. In March 2018, the National Rifle Association (NRA), which had helped defeat red flag legislation in Utah and Maryland, suggested it might be open to such laws under a strict set of conditions, including a court finding by ââ¬Å"clear and convincing evidence that the person in question poses a significant risk of danger. Despite this statement, the NRA went on to help block red flag legislation in Arizona in 2019. In Congress, virtually all Democrats and a few Republicans are receptive to red flag laws. The day after the mass shootings in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, killed 31 people, President Donald Trump urged states to implement red flag laws to remove guns from ââ¬Å"those judged to pose a grave risk to public safety.â⬠In televised remarks from the White House on August 5, 2019, Trump stated, ââ¬Å"We must make sure that those judged to pose a grave risk to public safety do not have access to firearms and that if they do, those firearms can be taken through rapid due process.â⬠States With Red Flag Laws As of August 2019, red flag laws had been enacted in 17 states and the District of Columbia. Twelve states enacted red flag laws after the shooting at Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, on February 14, 2018, left 17 dead. The states of California, Connecticut, Indiana, Oregon, and Washington, had enacted red flag laws prior to 2018. The 17 states and District of Columbia (in red) that had enacted red flag gun violence prevention laws as of August 2019. Creative Commons With only slight variations, all current red flag laws allow family members and law enforcement to petition a state judge to issue ERPOs directing the confiscation of all guns from the individual they believe poses a threat to their safety. In all cases, the petitioner must present evidence of why the gun owner poses a threat to others, as well as to himself or herself. If the ERPO is granted, the named individualââ¬â¢s guns are confiscated and held by police for a set minimum period, after which the gun owner must prove to the court that he or she no longer poses a risk in order to get their firearms back. The man, un-named in this story, arrogantly decides to break from the main trail to take a less traveled route against the advice of the seasoned old-timer of Sulfur Creek, who warns of traveling alone in such severe conditions. The man is described as being without imagination and not aware of the significance of the things around him, how frail his life is. As his journey prolongs, his confidence builds as he continually cheats nature, but the temperature extendsâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦In Londonââ¬â¢s story, it is this realization by the man that has him swallow his pride and ego in admittance of how frail his existence really was. The events leading to the manââ¬â¢s revelation build his character to be very pompous and arrogant; this being his first winter and a newcomer to the area, not heeding the warning of such seasoned prospects as the old-timer is foolish. He even recollects having laughed at the old-timer upon mention of ââ¬Å"how cold it sometimes got in the country.â⬠(Kennedy Giona, 2007, p. 123) His self-belief is boasted, as he is able to dupe the thin ice and avoid the freezing water beneath it multiple times, even sending the reluctant dog ahead of him in one instance. What the man lacks is basic instinct, which is inherent in the dog, to know that it is too cold to travel in such rigorous conditions. He disregards all of the signs, even though many are very much apparent to him. He can feel it getting colder in his numb limbs, and see it getting colder as his spit freezes before even reaching the ground, yet he is determined to continue. In his lack of experience, he misses the dogâ⬠â¢s hesitance to leave the fire built at lunch, as well its delay to press on over the thin ice. The manââ¬â¢s instinct has been replaced by intellect, which allows him to reason with himself into thinking that the temperature is just a number or that he can easily see where the pitfalls lay along the snowy trail. Klaus screamed, a scream that reminded Bonnie of ancient predators, of the sabertooth cat and the bull mammoth. The throw had been a good one. ââ¬Å"Damon,â⬠Bonnie whispered. He was standing at the edge of the clearing, framed by oak trees. As she watched, he took a step toward Klaus, and then another; lithe stalking steps filled with deadly purpose. And he was angry. Bonnie would have run from the look on his face if her muscles hadnââ¬â¢t been frozen. She had never seen such menace so barely held in check. ââ¬Å"Getâ⬠¦ awayâ⬠¦ from my brother,â⬠he said, almost breathing it, with his eyes never leaving Klausââ¬â¢s as he took another step. Klaus screamed again, but his hands stopped their frantic scrabbling. ââ¬Å"You idiot! We donââ¬â¢t have to fight! I told you that at the house! We can ignore each other!â⬠Damonââ¬â¢s voice was no louder than before. ââ¬Å"Get away from my brother.â⬠Bonnie could feel it inside him, a swell of Power like a tsunami. He continued, so softly that Bonnie had to strain to hear him, ââ¬Å"Before I tear your heart out.â⬠Bonnie could move after all. She stepped backward. ââ¬Å"I told you!â⬠screamed Klaus, frothing. Damon didnââ¬â¢t acknowledge the words in any way. His whole being seemed focused on Klausââ¬â¢s throat, on his chest, on the beating heart inside that he was going to tear out. Klaus picked up the unbroken lance and rushed him. In spite of all the blood, the blond man seemed to have plenty of strength left. The rush was sudden, violent, and almost inescapable. Bonnie saw him thrust the lance at Damon and shut her eyes involuntarily, and then opened them an instant later as she heard the flurry of wings. Klaus had plunged right through the spot where Damon had been, and a black crow was soaring upward while a single feather floated down. As Bonnie stared, Klausââ¬â¢s rush took him into the darkness beyond the clearing and he disappeared. Dead silence fell in the wood. Bonnieââ¬â¢s paralysis broke slowly, and she first stepped, and then ran to where Stefan lay. He didnââ¬â¢t open his eyes at her approach; he seemed unconscious. She knelt beside him. And then she felt a sort of horrible calm creep over her, like someone who has been swimming in ice water and at last feels the first undeniable signs of hypothermia. If she hadnââ¬â¢t had so many successive shocks already, she might have fled screaming or dissolved into hysterics. But as it was, this was simply the last step, the last little slide into unreality. Into a world that couldnââ¬â¢t be, but was. Sheââ¬â¢d never seen anybody hurt like this. Not even Mr. Tanner, and he had died of his wounds. Nothing Mary had ever said could help fix this. Even if theyââ¬â¢d had Stefan on a stretcher outside an operating room, it wouldnââ¬â¢t have been enough. In that state of dreadful calm she looked up to see a flutter of wings blur and shimmer in the moonlight. Damon stood beside her, and she spoke quite collectedly and rationally. ââ¬Å"Will giving him blood help?â⬠He didnââ¬â¢t seem to hear her. His eyes were all black, all pupil. That barely leashed violence, that sense of ferocious energy held back, was gone. He knelt and touched the dark head on the ground. ââ¬Å"Stefan?â⬠Bonnie shut her eyes. Damonââ¬â¢s scared, she thought. Damonââ¬â¢s scared-Damon!-and oh, God, I donââ¬â¢t know what to do. Thereââ¬â¢s nothing to do-and itââ¬â¢s all over and weââ¬â¢re all lost and Damon is scared for Stefan. He isnââ¬â¢t going to take care of things and he hasnââ¬â¢t got a solution and somebodyââ¬â¢s got to fix this. And oh, God, please help me because Iââ¬â¢m so frightened and Stefanââ¬â¢s dying and Meredith and Matt are hurt and Klaus is going to come back. She opened her eyes to look at Damon. He was white, his face looking terrifyingly young at that moment, with those dilated black eyes. ââ¬Å"Klaus is coming back,â⬠Bonnie said quietly. She wasnââ¬â¢t afraid of him anymore. They werenââ¬â¢t a centuries-old hunter and a seventeen-year-old human girl, sitting here at the edge of the world. They were just two people, Damon and Bonnie, who had to do the best they could. ââ¬Å"I know,â⬠Damon said. He was holding Stefanââ¬â¢s hand, looking completely unembarrassed about it, and it seemed quite logical and sensible. Bonnie could feel him sending Power into Stefan, could also feel that it wasnââ¬â¢t enough. ââ¬Å"Would blood help him?â⬠ââ¬Å"Not much. A little, maybe.â⬠ââ¬Å"Anything that helps at all weââ¬â¢ve got to try.â⬠Stefan whispered, ââ¬Å"No.â⬠Bonnie was surprised. Sheââ¬â¢d thought he was unconscious. But his eyes were open now, open and alert and smoldering green. They were the only alive thing about him. ââ¬Å"Donââ¬â¢t be stupid,â⬠Damon said, his voice hardening. He was gripping Stefanââ¬â¢s hand until his knuckles whitened. ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢re badly hurt.â⬠ââ¬Å"I wonââ¬â¢t break my promise.â⬠That immovable stubbornness was in Stefanââ¬â¢s voice, in his pale face. And when Damon opened his mouth again, undoubtedly to say that Stefan would break it and like it or Damon would break his neck, Stefan added, ââ¬Å"Especially when it wonââ¬â¢t do any good.â⬠Only the truth would do. And Stefan was telling the truth. He was still looking at his brother, who was looking back, all that fierce, furious attention focused on Stefan as it had been focused on Klaus earlier. As if somehow that would help. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m not badly hurt, Iââ¬â¢m dead,â⬠Stefan said brutally, his eyes locked on Damonââ¬â¢s. Their last and greatest struggle of wills, Bonnie thought. ââ¬Å"And you need to get Bonnie and the others out of here.â⬠ââ¬Å"We wonââ¬â¢t leave you,â⬠Bonnie intervened. That was the truth; she could say that. You read "The Vampire Diaries: Dark Reunion Chapter Fifteen" in category "Essay examples" ââ¬Å"You have to!â⬠Stefan didnââ¬â¢t glance aside, didnââ¬â¢t look away from his brother. ââ¬Å"Damon, you know Iââ¬â¢m right. Klaus will be here any minute. Donââ¬â¢t throw your life away. Donââ¬â¢t throw their lives away.â⬠ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t give a damn about their lives,â⬠Damon hissed. The truth also, Bonnie thought, curiously unoffended. There was only one life Damon cared about here, and it wasnââ¬â¢t his own. ââ¬Å"Yes, you do!â⬠Stefan flared back. He was hanging on to Damonââ¬â¢s hand with just as fierce a grip, as if this was a contest and he could force Damon to concede that way. ââ¬Å"Elena had a last request; well, this is mine. You have Power, Damon. I want you to use it to help them.â⬠ââ¬Å"Stefanâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ Bonnie whispered helplessly. ââ¬Å"Promise me,â⬠Stefan said to Damon, and then a spasm of pain twisted his face. For uncountable seconds Damon simply looked down at him. Then he said, ââ¬Å"I promise,â⬠quick and sharp as the stroke of a dagger. He let go of Stefanââ¬â¢s hand and stood, turning to Bonnie. ââ¬Å"Come on.â⬠ââ¬Å"We canââ¬â¢t leave himâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ ââ¬Å"Yes, we can.â⬠There was nothing young about Damonââ¬â¢s face now. Nothing vulnerable. ââ¬Å"You and your human friends are leaving here, permanently. I am coming back.â⬠Bonnie shook her head. She knew, dimly, that Damon wasnââ¬â¢t betraying Stefan, that it was some case of Damon putting Stefanââ¬â¢s ideals above Stefanââ¬â¢s life, but it was all too abstruse and incomprehensible to her. She didnââ¬â¢t understand it and she didnââ¬â¢t want to. All she knew was that Stefan couldnââ¬â¢t be left lying there. ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢re coming now,â⬠Damon said, reaching for her, the steely ring back in his voice. Bonnie prepared herself for a fight, and then something happened that made all their debating meaningless. There was a crack like a giant whip and a flash like daylight, and Bonnie was blinded. When she could see through the afterimage, her eyes flew to the flames that were licking up from a newly blackened hole at the base of a tree. Bonnieââ¬â¢s eye darted to him next, as the only other thing moving in the clearing. He was waving the bloody white ash stake heââ¬â¢d pulled out of his own back like a gory trophy. Lightning rod, thought Bonnie illogically, and then there was another crash. It stabbed down from an empty sky, in huge blue-white forks that lit everything like the sun at noon. Bonnie watched as one tree and then another was hit, each one closer than the last. Flames licked up like hungry red goblins among the leaves. Two trees on either side of Bonnie exploded, with cracks so loud that she felt rather than heard it, a piercing pain in her eardrums. Damon, whose eyes were more sensitive, threw up a hand to protect them. Then he shouted ââ¬Å"Klaus!â⬠and sprang toward the blond man. He wasnââ¬â¢t stalking now; this was the deadly race of attack. The burst of killing speed of the hunting cat or the wolf. Lightning caught him in midspring. Bonnie screamed as she saw it, jumping to her feet. There was a blue flash of superheated gases and a smell of burning, and then Damon was down, lying motionless on his face. Bonnie could see tiny wisps of smoke rise from him, just as they did from the trees. Speechless with horror, she looked at Klaus. He was swaggering through the clearing, holding his bloody stick like a golf club. He bent down over Damon as he passed, and smiled. Bonnie wanted to scream again, but she didnââ¬â¢t have the breath. There didnââ¬â¢t seem to be any air left to breathe. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ll deal with you later,â⬠Klaus told the unconscious Damon. Then his face tipped up toward Bonnie. ââ¬Å"You,â⬠he said, ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m going to deal with right now.â⬠It was an instant before she realized he was looking at Stefan, and not her. Those electric blue eyes were fixed on Stefanââ¬â¢s face. They moved to Stefanââ¬â¢s bloody middle. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m going to eat you now, Salvatore.â⬠Bonnie was all alone. The only one left standing. And she was afraid. But she knew what she had to do. She let her knees collapse again, dropping to the ground beside Stefan. And this is how it ends, she thought. You kneel beside your knight and then you face the enemy. She looked at Klaus and moved so that she was shielding Stefan. He seemed to notice her for the first time, and frowned as if heââ¬â¢d found a spider in his salad. Firelight flickered orange-red on his face. ââ¬Å"No.â⬠And this is how the ending starts. Like this, so simply, with one word, and youââ¬â¢re going to die on a summer night. A summer night when the moon and stars are shining and bonfires burn like the flames the Druids used to summon the dead. ââ¬Å"Bonnie, go,â⬠Stefan said painfully. ââ¬Å"Get out while you can.â⬠ââ¬Å"No,â⬠Bonnie said. Iââ¬â¢m sorry, Elena, she thought. I canââ¬â¢t save him. This is all I can do. ââ¬Å"Get out of the way,â⬠Klaus said through his teeth. ââ¬Å"No.â⬠She could wait and let Stefan die this way, instead of with Klausââ¬â¢s teeth in his throat. It might not seem like much of a difference, but it was the most she could offer. ââ¬Å"Bonnieâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ Stefan whispered. ââ¬Å"Donââ¬â¢t you know who I am, girl? Iââ¬â¢ve walked with the devil. If you move, Iââ¬â¢ll let you die quickly.â⬠Bonnieââ¬â¢s voice had given out. She shook her head. Klaus threw back his own head and laughed. A little more blood trickled out, too. ââ¬Å"All right,â⬠he said. ââ¬Å"Have it your own way. Both of you go together.â⬠Summer night, Bonnie thought. The solstice eve. When the line between worlds is so thin. ââ¬Å"Say good night, sweetheart.â⬠No time to trance, no time for anything. Nothing except one desperate appeal. ââ¬Å"Elena!â⬠Bonnie screamed. ââ¬Å"Elena! Elena!â⬠Klaus recoiled. For an instant, it seemed as if the name alone had the power to alarm him. Or as if he expected something to respond to Bonnieââ¬â¢s cry. He stood, listening. Bonnie drew on her powers, putting everything she had into it, throwing her need and her call out into the void. And feltâ⬠¦ nothing. Nothing disturbed the summer night except the crackling sound of flames. Klaus turned back to Bonnie and Stefan, and grinned. Then Bonnie saw the mist creeping along the ground. No-it couldnââ¬â¢t be mist. It must be smoke from the fire. But it didnââ¬â¢t behave like either. It was swirling, rising in the air like a tiny whirlwind or dust devil. It was gathering into a shape roughly the size of a man. Mist was flowing out of the ground, between the trees. Pools of it, each separate and distinct. Bonnie, staring mutely, could see through each patch, could see the flames, the oak trees, the bricks of the chimney. Klaus had stopped smiling, stopped moving, and was watching too. Bonnie turned to Stefan, unable to even frame the question. ââ¬Å"Unquiet spirits,â⬠he whispered huskily, his green eyes intent. ââ¬Å"The solstice.â⬠And then Bonnie understood. They were coming. From across the river, where the old cemetery lay. From the woods, where countless makeshift graves had been dug to dump bodies in before they rotted. The unquiet spirits, the soldiers who had fought here and died during the Civil War. A supernatural host answering the call for help. They were forming all around. There were hundreds of them. Bonnie could actually see faces now. The misty outlines were filling in with pale hues like so many runny watercolors. She saw a flash of blue, a glimmer of gray. Both Union and Confederate troops. Bonnie glimpsed a pistol thrust into a belt, the glint of an ornamented sword. Chevrons on a sleeve. A bushy dark beard; a long, well-tended white one. A small figure, child size, with dark holes for eyes and a drum hanging at thigh level. ââ¬Å"Oh, my God,â⬠she whispered. ââ¬Å"Oh, God.â⬠It wasnââ¬â¢t swearing. It was something like a prayer. Not that she wasnââ¬â¢t frightened of them, because she was. It was every nightmare sheââ¬â¢d ever had about the cemetery come true. Like her first dream about Elena, when things came crawling out of the black pits in the earth; only these things werenââ¬â¢t crawling, they were flying, skimming and floating until they swirled into human form. Everything that Bonnie had ever felt about the old graveyard-that it was alive and full of watching eyes, that there was some Power lurking behind its waiting stillness -was proving true. The earth of Fellââ¬â¢s Church was giving up its bloody memories. The spirits of those whoââ¬â¢d died here were walking again. And Bonnie could feel their anger. It frightened her, but another emotion was waking up inside her, making her catch her breath and clench tighter on Stefanââ¬â¢s hand. Because the misty army had a leader. One figure was floating in front of the others, closest to the place where Klaus stood. It had no shape or definition as yet, but it glowed and scintillated with the pale golden light of a candle flame. Then, before Bonnieââ¬â¢s eyes, it seemed to take on substance from the air, shining brighter and brighter every minute with an unearthly light. It was brighter than the circle of fire. It was so bright that Klaus leaned back from it and Bonnie blinked, but when she turned at a low sound, she saw Stefan staring straight into it, fearlessly, with wide-open eyes. And smiling, so faintly, as if glad to have this be the last thing he saw. Klaus dropped the stake. He had turned away from Bonnie and Stefan to face the being of light that hung in the clearing like an avenging angel. Golden hair streaming back in an invisible wind, Elena looked down on him. ââ¬Å"She came,â⬠Bonnie whispered. ââ¬Å"You asked her to,â⬠Stefan murmured. His voice trailed off into a labored breath, but he was still smiling. His eyes were serene. ââ¬Å"Stand away from them,â⬠Elena said, her voice coming simultaneously to Bonnieââ¬â¢s ears and her mind. It was like the chiming of dozens of bells, distant and close up at once. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s over now, Klaus.â⬠But Klaus rallied quickly. Bonnie saw his shoulders swell with a breath, noticed for the first time the hole in the back of the tan raincoat where the white ash stake had pierced him. It was stained dull red, and new blood was flowing now as Klaus flung out his arms. ââ¬Å"You think Iââ¬â¢m afraid of you?â⬠he shouted. He spun around, laughing at all the pallid forms. ââ¬Å"You think Iââ¬â¢m afraid of any of you? Youââ¬â¢re dead! Dust on the wind! You canââ¬â¢t touch me!â⬠ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢re wrong,â⬠Elena said in her wind-chime voice. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m one of the Old Ones! An Original! Do you know what that means?â⬠Klaus turned again, addressing all of them, his unnaturally blue eyes seeming to catch some of the red glow of the fire. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ve never died. Every one of you has died, you gallery of spooks! But not me. Death canââ¬â¢t touch me. I am invincible!â⬠The last word came in a shout so loud it echoed among the trees. Invincibleâ⬠¦ invincibleâ⬠¦ invincible. Bonnie heard it fading into the hungry sound of the fire. Elena waited until the last echo had died. Then she said, very simply, ââ¬Å"Not quite.â⬠She turned to look at the misty shapes around her. ââ¬Å"He wants to spill more blood here.â⬠A new voice spoke up, a hollow voice that ran like a trickle of cold water down Bonnieââ¬â¢s spine. ââ¬Å"Thereââ¬â¢s been enough killing, I say.â⬠It was a Union soldier with a double row of buttons on his jacket. ââ¬Å"More than enough,â⬠said another voice, like the boom of a faraway drum. A Confederate holding a bayonet. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s time somebody stopped itâ⬠-an old man in home-dyed butternut cloth. ââ¬Å"We canââ¬â¢t let it go onâ⬠-the drummer boy with the black holes for eyes. ââ¬Å"No more blood spilled!â⬠Several voices took it up at once. ââ¬Å"No more killing!â⬠The cry passed from one to another, until the swell of sound was louder than the roar of the fire. ââ¬Å"No more blood!â⬠ââ¬Å"You canââ¬â¢t touch me! You canââ¬â¢t kill me!â⬠ââ¬Å"Letââ¬â¢s take ââ¬Ëim, boys!â⬠ââ¬Å"You canââ¬â¢t kill me! Iââ¬â¢m immortal!â⬠The tornado swept away into the darkness beyond Bonnieââ¬â¢s sight. Following it was a trail of ghosts like a cometââ¬â¢s tail, shooting off into the night sky. ââ¬Å"Where are they taking him?â⬠Bonnie didnââ¬â¢t mean to say it aloud; she just blurted it out before she thought. But Elena heard. ââ¬Å"Where he wonââ¬â¢t do any harm,â⬠she said, and the look on her face stopped Bonnie from asking any other questions. There was a squealing, bleating sound from the other side of the clearing. Bonnie turned and saw Tyler, in his terrible part-human, part-animal shape, on his feet. There was no need for Carolineââ¬â¢s club. He was staring at Elena and the few remaining ghostly figures and gibbering. ââ¬Å"Donââ¬â¢t let them take me! Donââ¬â¢t let them take me too!â⬠Before Elena could speak, he had spun around. He regarded the fire, which was higher than his own head, for an instant, then plunged right through it, crashing into the forest beyond. Through a parting of the flames, Bonnie saw him drop to the ground, beating out flames on himself, then rise and run again. Then the fire flared up and she couldnââ¬â¢t see anything more. But sheââ¬â¢d remembered something: Meredith-and Matt. Meredith was lying propped up, her head in Carolineââ¬â¢s lap, watching. Matt was still on his back. Hurt, but not so badly hurt as Stefan. ââ¬Å"Elena,â⬠Bonnie said, catching the bright figureââ¬â¢s attention, and then she simply looked at him. The brightness came closer. Stefan didnââ¬â¢t blink. He looked into the heart of the light and smiled. ââ¬Å"Heââ¬â¢s been stopped now. Thanks to you.â⬠ââ¬Å"It was Bonnie who called us. And she couldnââ¬â¢t have done it at the right place and the right time without you and the others.â⬠ââ¬Å"I tried to keep my promise.â⬠ââ¬Å"I know, Stefan.â⬠Bonnie didnââ¬â¢t like the sound of this at all. It sounded too much like a farewell-a permanent one. Her own words floated back to her: He might go to another place or-or just go out. And she didnââ¬â¢t want Stefan to go anywhere. Surely anyone who looked that much like an angelâ⬠¦ ââ¬Å"Elena,â⬠she said, ââ¬Å"canââ¬â¢t you-do something? Canââ¬â¢t you help him?â⬠Her voice was shaking. ââ¬Å"I can do something,â⬠she said. ââ¬Å"But I donââ¬â¢t know if itââ¬â¢s the kind of help he wants.â⬠She turned back to Stefan. ââ¬Å"Stefan, I can cure what Klaus did. Tonight I have that much Power. But I canââ¬â¢t cure what Katherine did.â⬠Bonnieââ¬â¢s numbed brain struggled with this for a while. What Katherine did-but Stefan had recovered months ago from Katherineââ¬â¢s torture in the crypt. Then she understood. What Katherine had done was make Stefan a vampire. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s been too long,â⬠Stefan was saying to Elena. ââ¬Å"If you did cure it, Iââ¬â¢d be a pile of dust.â⬠ââ¬Å"Yes.â⬠Elena didnââ¬â¢t smile, just went on looking at him steadily. ââ¬Å"Do you want my help, Stefan?â⬠ââ¬Å"To go on living in this world in the shadowsâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ Stefanââ¬â¢s voice was a whisper now, his green eyes distant. Bonnie wanted to shake him. Live, she thought to him, but she didnââ¬â¢t dare say it for fear sheââ¬â¢d make him decide just the opposite. Then she thought of something else. ââ¬Å"To go on trying,â⬠she said, and both of them looked at her. She looked back, chin thrust out, and saw the beginning of a smile on Elenaââ¬â¢s bright lips. Elena turned to Stefan, and that tiny hint of a smile passed to him. ââ¬Å"Yes,â⬠he said quietly, and then, to Elena, ââ¬Å"I want your help.â⬠She bent and kissed him. Bonnie saw the brightness flow from her to Stefan, like a river of sparkling light engulfing him. It flooded over him the way the dark mist had surrounded Klaus, like a cascade of diamonds, until his entire body glowed like Elenaââ¬â¢s. For an instant Bonnie imagined she could see the blood inside him turned molten, flowing out to each vein, each capillary, healing everything it touched. Then the glow faded to a golden aura, soaking back into Stefanââ¬â¢s skin. His shirt was still demolished, but underneath the flesh was smooth and firm. Bonnie, feeling her own eyes wide with wonder, couldnââ¬â¢t help reaching out to touch. It felt just like any skin. The horrible wounds were gone. She laughed aloud with sheer excitement, and then looked up, sobering. ââ¬Å"Elena- thereââ¬â¢s Meredith, too-ââ¬Å" The bright being that was Elena was already moving across the clearing. Meredith looked up at her from Carolineââ¬â¢s lap. ââ¬Å"Hello, Elena,â⬠she said, almost normally, except that her voice was so weak. Elena bent and kissed her. The brightness flowed again, encompassing Meredith. And when it faded, Meredith stood up on her own two feet. Then she went to Damon. He was still lying where he had fallen. The ghosts had passed over him, taking no notice of him. Elenaââ¬â¢s brightness hovered over him, one shining hand reaching to touch his hair. Then she bent and kissed the dark head on the ground. As the sparkling light faded, Damon sat up and shook his head. He saw Elena and went still, then, every movement careful and self-contained, stood up. He didnââ¬â¢t say anything, only looked as Elena turned back to Stefan. He was silhouetted against the fire. Bonnie had scarcely noticed how the red glow had grown so that it almost eclipsed Elenaââ¬â¢s gold. But now she saw it and felt a thrill of alarm. ââ¬Å"My last gift to you,â⬠Elena said, and it began to rain. Not a thunder-and-lightning storm, but a thorough pattering rain that soaked everything-Bonnie included-and doused the fire. It was fresh and cool, and it seemed to wash all the horror of the last hours away, cleansing the glade of everything that had happened there. Bonnie tilted her face up to it, shutting her eyes, wanting to stretch out her arms and embrace it. At last it slackened and she looked again at Elena. Elena was looking at Stefan, and there was no smile on her lips now. The wordless sorrow was back in her face. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s midnight,â⬠she said. ââ¬Å"And I have to go.â⬠Bonnie knew instantly, at the sound of it, that ââ¬Å"goâ⬠didnââ¬â¢t just mean for the moment. ââ¬Å"Goâ⬠meant forever. Elena was going somewhere that no trance or dream could reach. And Stefan knew it too. ââ¬Å"Just a few more minutes,â⬠he said, reaching for her. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m sorry-ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"Elena, wait-I need to tell you-ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"I canââ¬â¢t!â⬠For the first time the serenity of that bright face was destroyed, showing not only gentle sadness but tearing grief. ââ¬Å"Stefan, I canââ¬â¢t wait. Iââ¬â¢m so sorry.â⬠It was as if she were being pulled backward, retreating from them into some dimension that Bonnie could not see. Maybe the same place Honoria went when her task was finished, Bonnie thought. To be at peace. But Elenaââ¬â¢s eyes didnââ¬â¢t look as if she were at peace. They clung to Stefan, and she reached out her hand toward his, hopelessly. They didnââ¬â¢t touch. Wherever Elena was being pulled was too far away. ââ¬Å"Elena-please!â⬠It was the voice Stefan had called her with in his room. As if his heart was breaking. ââ¬Å"Stefan,â⬠Elena called again, but her voice came as if from a long distance. The brightness was almost gone. Then, as Bonnie stared through helpless tears, it winked out. Leaving the clearing silent once again. They were all gone, the ghosts of Fellââ¬â¢s Church who had walked for one night to keep more blood from being spilled. The bright spirit that had led them had vanished without a trace, and even the moon and stars were covered by clouds. Bonnie knew that the wetness on Stefanââ¬â¢s face wasnââ¬â¢t due to the rain that was still splashing down. He was standing, chest heaving, looking at the last place where Elenaââ¬â¢s brightness had been seen. And all the longing and the pain Bonnie had glimpsed on his face at times before was nothing to what she saw now. ââ¬Å"It isnââ¬â¢t fair,â⬠she whispered. Then she shouted it to the sky, not caring who she was addressing. ââ¬Å"It isnââ¬â¢t fair!â⬠Stefan had been breathing more and more quickly. Now he lifted his face too, not in anger but in unbearable pain. His eyes were searching the clouds as if he might find some last trace of golden light, some flicker of brightness there. He couldnââ¬â¢t. Bonnie saw the spasm go through him, like the agony of Klausââ¬â¢s stake. And the cry that burst out of him was the most terrible thing sheââ¬â¢d ever heard. ââ¬Å"Elena!â⬠How to cite The Vampire Diaries: Dark Reunion Chapter Fifteen, Essay examples Mikehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16549845635989615112noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3593062285409250006.post-75644131656104849202020-05-02T09:29:00.001-07:002020-05-02T09:29:03.059-07:00Marketing Segmentation Strategy Free Sample for Students Questions: 1.Multisegment Targeting Offers Many Benefits to Firms, as well as Many Additional Costs. List two benefits and four Costs of Multisegment Targeting. Provide Examples and Elaboration.2.Name and Describe four Categories of New Products.3.List the Four Stages of the Product life Cycle. Then describe the Promotional Strategies used in each Stage.4.Describe all four tools of the Promotional mix to Promote the Product. Answers: Benefits and costs of multi-segmenting For a company to succeed there is the need for segmenting the market so that the parts of the market can be served best and makes the company profitable at the same time. The need for strategies that enhance the best relationships with the right customers is always a priority for many firms that are competing[1]. The traditional mass marketing that used to be a custom for most companies is now being abandoned. The companies are now producing products that are tailored to meet specific needs of the customers. It has been noted that consumers have varying tastes and preferences and as such segmenting and targeting such customers have benefited most companies that engage in such practices of segmentation[2]. One of the advantages of segmentation is that it increases the focus on the enterprise. Segmentation has the power of enabling a company focus on specific market segments. The returns in most cases increase with increases in attention[3]. A good example is the automobile industry li ke Toyota who started focusing on sectors that deal with small cars, a move that has seen Toyota rise globally. Multi-segmenting increases the competitiveness of the company[4]. Once a company focuses on a particular segment it means that such a firm will innovate products that suit such a market making the business more competitive as compared to the competitors[5]. A good illustration is the Johnsons baby products that segmented the baby market and specializes in baby stuffs a move that has seen Johnson claim a large portion of the market share globally. However, there are some limitations with multi segmenting and are referred to as the costs[6]. With the geographic segmentation, it is limited in scope in the sense that it generalizes the tastes and preferences of consumers. The geographic segmentation requires combination with another strategy so as to be effective. Segments, on the other hand, tend to be small which may affect the operation of a firm. In the case that the marke t served is small, it means the company will experience low turnover which threatens a companys viability in the long-run. In a market that has many brands, it may be risky segmenting such markets due to the many competitors providing such products. As a consequence, there are additional costs that reduce the profits for the firm. Lastly, in the case of a new product, it may be deemed risky segmenting such a market as no research has been conducted on such new products[7]. Convincing the consumers to utilize such commodities may take extra effort so as to segment such a market. 2.Categories of new products Products can get categorized into various classifications depending on the level they are placed on the market. One category is that of new to world products where a company goes an extra mile producing a product that has never existed before[8]. In this category, the firm diversifies the product, and in most cases, the products are only new to the firm but not to the already existing the market[9]. A good illustration is the Coca-Cola Company that is well known for the good quality of its beverages. If Coca Cola decides to diversify into snacks and cookies, then these new products would be classified as the new for the Coca-Cola Company. The second classification is the product line extension which is the companys additional of more products to the already existing stock. In this category, a company develops a brand that stands out among others regarding color, shape, and texture. In the example of Coca-Cola Company, as it has been observed, the company is producing an additional product such as mineral water and juices and as such would get considered as additional products[10]. With product improvements, it entails making amendments to the existing product that is in the marketplace. In most cases, the change may be minor or major and may involve developing the features of the products to suit the changing needs of the consumers. In some cases, the process is aimed at updating the products so that they meet the standards that are in the market or it may be the case of technological improvement making the commodities to be improved at the same time. Such upgrades may make the product competitive and increase the benefits that consumers can get from such a product. A good example is the Microsoft that has always been updating the windows, for instance, there was Windows 7, then Windows 8 and currently the consumers are using Windows 10[11]. Finally, product repositioning involves changing the image of a product in the marketplace; however, the product in most instances is an existing product. In most instances, there is communication that is intended to depict the range of benefits from such a product. Reposition of the product is also followed by changing the design of the product either through the mode of packaging. A good illustration is when in the past, Lucozade was meant for the sick, but as of today, it has been repositioned to serve the athletes. 3.Product lifecycle Consumers have the tendency of purchasing products in the markets worth millions of money every year. The products purchased just like the human beings have a lifecycle meaning that there are those products that exit the market earlier as compared to the others. The new products, on the other hand, have the advantage of being dominant in the market and gaining popularity. Most companies, on the other hand, have invested heavily in product development after realizing that their products have a limited lifespan and it is, therefore, their responsibility to make sure they remain relevant in the market[12]. As products move and evolve along the four stages, various stages should be employed to maintain the success of the product. The promotional strategies that can be employed are as follows: Introduction When launching a new product in the market, the main objective of the firm will be to inform the target group of the existence of such a product. Launching a new product is the most expensive stage for any company. At this stage, it will be critical to employ informative advertising such as the radio, television, and magazines[13]. Growth At this stage, it is characterized by increase in the sales volume and profits. It is at this stage that the company enjoys the economies of scale which has the effect of pushing the profits margins up. The firms as a result of reaping the profits have the advantage of spending money on the promotional strategies with the aim of maximizing their potential. Since the product has already gained acceptance from the target market, the firm will use a strategy that aims at increasing the loyalty of the customers[14]. Maturity At maturity stage, the product is already established, and in most instances, the manufacturer aims at maintaining the market share. It is at this juncture that competition is at its highest among the firms and businesses are advised to invest wisely in any market they wish to penetrate. The product should also be in a position to undergo modifications or upgrades which can make them more competitive in the market. Since the product experiences more competition from the other brands, there is need to engage in persuasive advertising to entice their clients to use their products over those produced by the competitors. The benefits or advantages of using a product should be communicated to the audience clearly[15]. Decline The market for the product at this stage begins to decline a stage referred to as the decline stage. The decline could be associated with a market getting saturated or because the consumers have switched to a particular product. The decline stage though inevitable, it still provides opportunities for companies to continue reaping profits through reducing the costs of production or firms venturing into cheaper markets. Reminder advertising would be favorable at this stage reminding consumers that the product still exists. 4.Tools of promotional mix One of the instruments is advertising where it is necessary that awareness of the new program should be created either through the flyers conveying the message on weight loss. Advertising can also assume the dimensions of the media through the television, radio, and internet[16]. Sales promotion is also another useful tool. In this case, since the program is very in the market, it would be necessary to have the customers believe that there will be price cuts may be 15% off would be a great deal and attract many customers[17]. Public relations are aimed at creating a lasting impression about the company. Holding a charity campaign for the neighborhood may create a good deal for the new program. Publicity may entail inviting some prominent person who gets featured in advertising campaigns using the new products[18]. Personal selling has always held the compelling power of convincing the customers to purchase the products[19]. Conducting door to door campaigns informing people of the new product and its advantages and benefits has the power of inducing some people to join the program[20]. References Akers, Helen. 2017. If the researchers will find the answer to these questions, the researchers could further understand how remedial classes affect the students in academics. The researchers want to know the advantages of having this kind of program to the remedial students. And lastly, the researchers wanted to know if the students are in favor of this program. Significance of the Study This research is very simple but the researchers know that many will infinite from these. There are people who may gain or get something from the research. This research could help them in some ways. The people that the researchers are talking about are the people who are connected to remedial classes and academics. And the researchers think that these people The students who undergo remedial classes. The students who undergo remedial classes are the main beneficiaries of this research. The students can give their opinions to the remedial classes. Also, through this research, the students could realize that students study habits are not enough for the students to get high grade. The researchers wanted the students to study harder so that the students would not be required to attend remedial classes next time. Remedial teachers. In this research, the remedial teachers could know the opinions of the students about the remedial classes. The remedial teachers could also understand the students better. And the teachers could improve their way of teaching after they know the opinions of the students. Subject Area Coordinators. Like the remedial teachers, the subject area coordinators would also know the opinions and recommendations of the students about remedial classes. The subject area coordinators could improve the remedial classes by the opinions and recommendations Of the students. The researchers know that the subject area coordinators are the ones who are planning the some things about remedial classes so that this research could help the subject area coordinators in this matter.Academic Coordinator. The academic coordinator could also know the opinions of the students about remedial classes and the academic coordinator could decide better for this remedial class. The academic coordinator could also help improve the remedial classes for the remedial students. Assumption Academy. This research could help the school by deciding if the remedial program would resume or not. By this research, the school would know if remedial classes really help the students in terms of academics. Also, the school could benefit in this research by improving the kind of remedial classes the school has. Parents of Remedial Students. The parents of the students who undergo remedial classes could know the students study habits. This research could help the parents realize that the parents must help the students and guide the students in studying. The parents should encourage the students to study These people are who the researchers think that may benefit in these research. This research is for them and the researchers hope that these people could gain some information from this research.Scope and Limitation of the Study The researchers are focused on the effects of remedial classes to the school year 2011-2012. The researchers want to know if this remedial program really helps the academic performance of the students or the program is just nothing and does not help the students in any ways. The researchers want to know if the students are in favor of this program or do the students have any suggestions for this program. The researchers respondents for the research are the students of Assumption Academy school year 2011-2012 who undergo remedial classes. The total number of students who undergo remedial classes is two hundred and six (206). The researchers computed the number of respondents by using the formula: N / 1+Nee and the researchers came up to 67. 32 or 67 respondents but the researchers decided to make it seventy two (72) just incase some survey forms will be lost. The researchers will select the respondents by using the Stratified Random Sampling. We Will group the names by year level and the researchers will get seventeen (17) from First Year, nineteen (19) from Second Year, and eighteen (18) from the Third and Fourth Years. The researchers will use the Questioning Method because the researchers want to have a survey kind of study and the researchers will do the Questionnaire Technique. The researchers will tally the data that will be gathered, get the frequency and get the percentage by using: Frequency / N x 100. Definition of Terms Remedial Classes denoting or relating to special teaching, teaching methods, or material for students who do not understand the lessons. Academic Performance ? how well a student meets standards set out by the institution itself. Study Habits approaches applied to learning. Age the whole duration of a human being. Sex a range of characteristics used to distinguish between males and females. Year Level the level within a program of study or the level of the course. English the study of English Literature and English Language. Mathematics is the study of quantity, structure, space, and change. Science is a systematic enterprise that builds and organizes knowledge in the form of testable explanations and predictions about the universe. CHAPTER II THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK This is the part of the research where the readers could find some theory, iterative, and studies that can help to have the knowledge and further this research. These could give information and background about this research so that many could understand. Relevant Theory According to Greg Fielded (2004), Study habits help the student in critical reflection in skills out comes such as selecting, analyzing, critiquing, and synthesizing. In connection with this theory, it is stated that the good study habits will help the students in order for them to gain knowledge and understanding to be able for them to perform well in class and also for them to enhance their academic performances.Students failed and take remedial classes with some of their subjects because they do not know how to study. It is important for the students to have an overview of their lessons and also to know their skills and ability in some of their subjects. The study habits are learning tendencies that enable students to work private. Because every students has an ability to improve their academic skills in their own way of studying. And for the students to have a time for them to study their lessons and to improve their individual learning skills. According to Miss Emily Perez (2011 A good Education can give a better future I fail to proud you. Strive hard and be the best that you can be. The only luxury in this word that I can give you is Education so treasure it and dont stop learning. Grab the opportunity to make yourself better person. In connection with this theory, the students must recognize their ability and skills in pursuing with their studies. Enhancing ones ability in improving learning skill will gain a distinct knowledge that every individuals must have.Education will bring us opportunity to show what learning and understanding that the student gain in their study. And one way of showing it is to enhance the academic performance of every student. Because for the students to be able to gain success, each and every one should strive hard. And according to Benedict Baling (201 1), Success is dynamic and not constant. One should keep on improving oneself every step of the way. This means that anyone could be successful. One must always try his or her best in doing things. Like the students, the students should always strive hard to get high grades and do well in school. The students who are undergoing remedial classes must take advantage because the students who undergo in remedial classes get the chance of listening again to the explanation of the cheers. The students must apply what they learn in attending regular classes. The students should participate in class actively or better if the students will change and improve their study habits and this may cause also the improvement Of the students grades. Related Literature The important thing is to learn a lesson every time you lose. Life is a learning process and you have to try to learn whats best for you. This is according to John McElroy (2007). This tells everyone that it is normal to lose sometimes but when someone loses, that person must strive harder. That person must make losing an inspiration to do better. No one must lose hope. Like the students who undergo remedial classes, the students must not lose hope because everyone has a chance to get high grades so the students must always try their best, study hard and be able to be one of the students who excel in their studies. According to Martin Ford (1992) If you know what you want to do and it poses a challenge, its more effective. But remember: People must also believe that they have the capabilities and opportunities needed to achieve their goal The researchers think that some Of the students who undergo remedial lasses have now low trust to themselves in terms of studies. The quoted statement would like to remind the students and even other people that each and everyone have own capabilities. The students must always believe and trust themselves. The students must be determined in pursuing goals and studying hard could help in reaching goals. Related Studies The study of Rockwell Angelina Rexes, et al (2010) states that Cause the word remedial really means that it is for the students whom would like to improve their skills and learning. The study just tells us the real meaning of remedial. Remedial classes are for those students who like to improve their studies and get higher grades. And according to the study of Swamp Vaccinated (2004) How habits are developed in us and how finally our whole personality is influenced by our habits and conclude that everything we are is a result of habit. This states that everything people do is affected by the habits. So the students who undergo remedial classes must change and improve the study habits to have a better result in their academics. Conceptual Framework The researchers independent variable is remedial classes, age, sex, and year level. And the dependent variable of the research are the Academic Performance and the students and the researchers think that the two are connected to each other because remedial classes and the other factors affects the academic performance and the study habits of the knowledge and for the students to be able to perform well in class. The researchers also think that the students who undergo remedial classes will improve their attitude towards their study habits. And also, it is in order fo r the students to gain more understanding about the students academic performance. The researchers also think that the age, sex, and the dents year level may also be some of the factors why the students have poor academic performance. The students will also make some changes and improvements about their way of studying their lessons and enhance their academic performance.Conceptual Paradigm Figure 1 Independent Variable Hypothesis Formulation Null Hypothesis Dependent Variables The remedial classes have no significant effect to the academic performance of the highlights students at Assumption Academy school year 201 1-2012. Alternative Hypothesis There is a significant effect in the Academic performance of the highlights dents in taking remedial classes. Notes in Chapter II Baling, Benedict (201 1). Cross Roads. CHAPTER Ill RESEARCH METHODOLOGY This part of the research deals with the methods and techniques that the researchers used in this research. Stating the methods and techniques used in this research will let the readers know how the researchers gathered and collected the data that the researchers need in this research. Methods and Techniques of the Study The researchers used the descriptive method to determine the effects of medial classes to the academic performance of the highlights students studying at Assumption Academy School Year 201 1-2012.The researchers used descriptive research to help an individual understand the relationship among the variables. The research study made use of tally, frequency counts, percentages, mean, and standard deviation to describe the treatment of the remedial students to their study habits, academic performance, and to the remedial class. As an output, the descriptive method was effective to the research. The researchers found it effective to the g eneral and specific problems. Population and Sample The respondents of the research were the highlights students who undergo remedial classes. Source e is a photograph of troops waiting on the beaches, this photo shows the troops quite in order and disciplined, there is also no attacks from the Germans at this point so this must mean that the attacks werent on going and there were breaks. There are hundreds of solders in this single photograph so this means that there were thousands and thousands being evacuated. Source f is a different matter this is a point were the solders are being attacked on the beach, as they are firing at planes above, there is a very low possibility that they would hit the planes, although it could scare them off! This also gives you evidence that thee was bravery along the beaches as the English and French were fighting back. Source g isnt a primary account as this person was not on the beaches but he was the English minister of war of the time, so this evidence could be counted as first hand, he describes how the army is not destroyed but is there fighting as veterans as they have now have gained in experience of warfare and self-confidence. He is also saying that the British army has got Great Spirit and those they refuse to accept defeat, which is the guarantee of victory. This source is saying that the evacuation of Dunkirk was a great success but also a great disaster. Source H is two extracts from the daily express a English news paper that was published in may 31st, 1940 the newspaper articles see the evacuation of Dunkirk as a great success, as they point out the bravery of the ships crews daring the German guns, pointing out that tens of thousands back softly already but do not point out that thousands dead and captured, calling the fleet an armada of ships-all shapes and sizes, but that was only the first article the second is more of a rundown version as it is calling the army: Tired, Dirty, Hungry but unbeatable this is not far from the truth, also saying that there was a touch of glory in the army as it was see-able on the solders faces. Source I is an extract from a book from 1965 written by an British Historian so this is a secondary piece of evidence, he gives a lot of information on the evacuation but we cant be sure that it is reliable as he was not there, he believes that operation dynamo succeed beyond all expectation, He gives evidence of boats such as destroyers and says that there was a wide verity of boats helping, he proves that on the 3rd June the last men were evacuated, in all 339, 226 men evacuated but only 139,997 were French this shows that a lot of French were left behind either presumed captured or dead, it was a great deliverance as nearly all the B.E.F. were saved. All guns, tanks and other heavy equipment were lost, 6 destroyers were sunk and 19 were damaged, the R.A.F. had lost 474 planes. This extract is a great source of evidence for the question. Source J is my own information from various other sources, I found out that there was more or less no food, weapons or ammunition and this adds more info to the fact that it was a great disaster as well. All together 220 ships were destroyed these include, fire ships, travel, destroyers E.T.C. And from these destroyed ships smoke was seen in Dover. When the solders were getting on the boats they were tired, warn out, and a lot of them had gone slightly crazy from the sight of battle and death so as they were climbing aboard they were in a hurry, so they tried to scramble up the slippery sides of the boats which quite a few of people didnt make it and fell back into the smaller boats or water and had to go all the way back to the back of the line, this proves that the solders had turned undisciplined and non-organised, which caused a great delay and trouble in the evacuation. The planes used by the Germans were Ju87 dive bombers which whilst scattering bullets and bombs over the solders and beaches, these planes were designed to go very low at an vertical axis (they were able to pull up very quickly and avoided crashing), which to the solders looked like it was going suicide to hit them, this caused more despair and a loss of self-confidence. There were 2 very long wave breakers that were untouched the navy tried to bring up a large destroyer beside one and it managed to collect about 1000 solders every hour, this was a quicker way of evacuating, but it was bombed and the ship was destroyed but this proved hat it worked, on the second wave breaker they retried this and it worked again, the Germans did not destroy this one and it proved effective. In the begging when the B.E.F. was sent to Dunkirk in September they were sent with insufficient food and equipment, which pro-told the events, which would happen. A rights-based approach facilitates the realization of human rights by: fostering the inclusion of marginalized, socially excluded, vulnerable, or at-risk groups of people; addressing and challenging the barriers, inequalities, and injustices that are prevalent within the society; pursuing policies and programs that facilitate the well being of the service users. In most case, a rights-based approach gives services providers a stronger role to play in the manner in which services are designed and delivered. As a result, social care service users are rendered recipients of services that transform their lives and safeguard them against discriminatory treatment (Great Britain 2007, p.177). A right-based approach highlights the significance of empowerment and participation of parties impacted on by decisions to claim the rights, and accountability and capability to deliver from those responsible for social care service provision and delivery. ... need to reform institutions and transform power relations via enhanced participation, accountability, and participation and via compelling organizations to meet their rights obligations. A rights-informed approach to social care delivery and provision rests on guaranteeing that health and social care is provided and made accessible to all persons on a fair basis (Chapman 1994, p.4). Human rights represent the fundamental and irreducible rights for all individuals, which represent the moral and ethical principles that are critical to a democratic society. Human rights are grounded in a framework of fundamental values such as dignitary, equality, autonomy, respect, and fairness. The relevant human right instruments referred to in the paper entail: Human Rights Act, European Convention on Human Rights, especially Articles 2, 3, and 8; UN International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights; and, UN Conventional n Rights f Personas with Disabilities, especially Article 19. The European C onvention on Human Rights articles entail: the right to life (Article 2); the right to respect for private and family life (article 8); and, the right of not to be subjected to discrimination with relation to any of the rights within the Act (article 14). With regard to values, a rights-based approach highlights PANEL principles, namely: participation, accountability, non-discrimination, empowerment of individuals, and legality (appreciation of legal principles) (Steiner, Alston and Goodman 2008, p.300). Human rights apply to all, but are especially significant for persons who are at enhanced risk of poor treatment. Human rights can avail practical guidance to the formulation, implementation, evaluation, and monitoring of social care provision and delivery. One of the founding centers of the Enlightenment was France. Voltaire (1694ââ¬â1778) was a French radical thinker who epitomized the Enlightenment ideals of freedom of speech and rational thought over blind faith in religion. Baron de Montesquieu (1689ââ¬â1755) was another Enlightenment figure who revolutionized political discourse. He praised the republic as the best form of government and paved way for the division of the executive, the legislative, and the judiciary. Diderot was the architect of the Encyclopedia which was published over a period of twenty one years (1751ââ¬â1772). Though the Enlightenment ideals originated in France it spread to different parts of Europe and the world. Each country saw the emergence of a bunch of radical thinkers in various fields. In England it was epitomized by Isaac Newton. John Locke, Adam Smith, David Hume were the other exponents of the Enlightenment in England. In America the writings of Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin created waves. It encouraged a widespread thirst for knowledge among the elites and the cultivation of scientific rationalism. Many of these philosophes set the mood for a tremendous intellectual and cultural revolution which left no stone in the society unturned. In the essay let us look at the political, economic, and scientific ripples created by the Enlightenment across the world. Many leaders of the American Revolution like Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, and Thomas Paine were greatly influenced by the English and French Enlightenment thought, especially John Lockeââ¬â¢s idea of liberalism. The Enlightenment clearly defied the absolutism of monarchy and upheld democracy. KnowledgeI weaved my way down my driveway while imagining all the ways I could bring myself closer to Bella. Just to lightly touch her hair, to hold her close to me like I did so carelessly after the accident, or to bring her warm lips to mineâ⬠¦I trailed off in thought as the fantasy went visual. Enough, I ordered, though I was aching to feel the warmth of her rich skin. Enough. When I reached the end of the drive I knew what to expect, though, the insults that continued at maximum capacity fissured my nerves. Idiot! Jackass! Lunatic! I really hope you are happy! If I have to move againâ⬠¦, Rosalie was seething belligerence. The vivid image she thrust on my mind was my Vanquish being catastrophically driven off a ravine. I sighed and shook my head trying to dispel her thoughts, but after living with her for this long I'd learned to hum a tune or ignore her internal muttering, even when she was screaming at the top of her mental lungs and making the visual pictures more devastating. After watching all of the possible ways she would crash my car over and over in her head I realized that it didn't matter. It was Bella who was ultimately significant now. Her silent thoughts ?C how warm and trusting she is. Ah, I thought gleefully. My mental distraction worked perfectly. I sat in the car, my fingers still wrapped tightly on the steering wheel as I thought about going back. I inhaled deeply at her scent that was still lingering in the car. White hot knives cut down my throat, but I embraced it, content that I was satiated for the moment. A thought disrupted my internal blitheness. Boy, do you have some explaining to do. ââ¬Å"Emmett,â⬠I muttered, though I was grateful he had forgiven me of my actions so quickly. His low chuckle came from inside the house as he over took Jasper's knight in a game of chess. I had to deal with this now. I couldn't go see her until my family was resolved, though, honestly, I should never go back. Her life would be the better for it ?C she would have a life to live. Carlisle's car was parked next to Rosalie's M3. I sighed in relief. If he was here, then maybe Rosalie would be on her best behavior. More thoughts filled my mind bringing me back to the present. It was time to confront my family about the secrets that Bella logically pieced together. I finally persuaded myself into going inside to speak with Carlisle. Alice's thoughts interrupted my anxiety filled mind. I hope you've reconsidered your plans for the weekend. I love her, too. Her internal cry was a lament. I twitched slightly under the impact of the earlier vision. I tried to expunge her thoughts from my mind as my stomach began to twist in pain. Absurd ?C it was a lie, impossible. I would never hurt Bellaâ⬠¦would I? Bellaâ⬠¦in my armsâ⬠¦cold, white, deadâ⬠¦ The thoughts were inconceivable. Alice was blind or confused somehow, the vision insurmountable. The pain swiftly took me under ââ¬â it felt like my body was burning from the inside out, almost as if the pain of her death would literally make me combust. I gave Alice a grave look. ââ¬Å"You're wrong.â⬠My tone was hollow. Please, Edward! Alice begged. I could feel every degree of love she had for her. She doesn't even know her ?C her love was nonexistent compared to mine. I sighed. But doesn't everyone have that reaction to her? Hadn't I? Didn't I risk everything just to save her life so I could observe her; watch her sleep at night? My need to speak with Carlisle was growing at an immense rate. He would have answers. He always knew what to do. I marched past Alice where she was sitting on the stairs, her face rested on her hands, her lower lip jutting out slightly from her upper. I ignored her pouting, knowing it was because of her vision that was bringing her into this trepidation. And her vision was wrong. I clenched my teeth together as I spoke, making my words almost incoherent ââ¬Å"I'm strong.â⬠I'm brave enough, I tried to convince myself. ââ¬Å"I won't hurt her, Alice. Your vision is impossible!â⬠I'm begging you, she continued to plead. Her anguish was beginning to weigh on me. I shoved her mental insight from me viciously. How could I possibly bring death to her? I wanted ?C no ?C I needed Bella. The necessity to hold her, my hungerâ⬠¦my thirst for her was exponentially growing at a sizable intensity. But, it wasn't my thirst that I was craving the most; I desired for her, longed for the face, the voice, that accompanied the fragrance. I moved swiftly up the stairs so quick, in fact, a normal human wouldn't have seen me. Slowly opening the door to my potential sentencing I entered Carlisle's office. His face was so close to the book he was reading that his nose was nearly touching the pages. Association between PPI's and spontaneous bacterial peritonitisâ⬠¦His eyes moved up the page until they left the book flowing upward towards my face which was perfectly mirrored in his eyes. Guilt was resolutely displayed across my face. I looked away. Esme, joyfully flitting around the room, was re-organizing the bookshelves in effort to make room for new books Carlisle had just purchased. She caught my glance when I entered the room. Edward! She beamed. She didn't consciously think her name but to some extent of reasoning her mind was radiating the essence of Bella's presence that always accompanied me. The fond attachment she had formed for Bella, without ever meeting her, brought a hazardous new light upon being with her. If it were up to Esme, Bella would already be transformed into a vampire. My obvious love was enough for her to wish this often, though she would never voice her desires. Each second I grew closer to Bella was another second that was being taken from her life. My thirst. My love for her. Which one was stronger? Would they intermingle and make her a vampire? Risky. My thought was fleeting because I knew that I wouldn't leave her alone and that I wouldn't change her. What was the future, her fate? The internal struggle of her inevitable future began nagging at me almost as bad as Rosalie thought's that were now blaring in my head. This wasn't something I could run from. Maybe Carlisle would have the answer. The strong desire for advice wasn't approaching quick enough. I was growing impatient at all the courtesies. Hello Edward. His mental tone showed no inflection that he knew of Bella's knowledge. Good; Rosalie kept her trap shut, another surprise on top of the already growing pile of shocking news that I seemed to be attracting. Would this news, this information, prove my malefaction? Now that I was standing here, ready to concede my guilt to him, I didn't know what to say, speech wouldn't form. How do you tell someone you deeply care for, more than that, your creatorâ⬠¦your father that you betrayed their family ?C my family ?C for a mere human girl? But to me she wasn't just ahuman girl ââ¬â she was thehuman girl, the only one that ever truly mattered. Carlisle read my expression, his thoughts scattering in every direction, dancing in his mind before he settled on being alarmed at my facial expression. My calm fa?ade must have faded. What is it Edward? What is wrong? Is Bellaâ⬠¦his thoughts trailed off, but I knew the direction they were heading. Luckily, his concern for that subject was unnecessary. For now. ââ¬Å"Carlisle, Iâ⬠¦sheâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ I hesitated, pausing. I didn't know how to tell my family, those who loved me the most, that I was Judas made flesh. A betrayer. Carlisle raised an eyebrow at my state of irresolution. ââ¬Å"Edward? Is everything all right?â⬠he asked incredulously, bringing attention to our conversation. Esme turned at his words, bringing her thoughts and concentration to the open dialog. Ignoring their stares I continued to sway on the spot, standing there with my mouth halfway open like a gold fish out of water gasping for air. The words failed me. Would this, of all things, break their faith in me? No one had so absolutely guessed our secret before, learned our truths. If my heart was alive, beating, I swear even a human would be able to hear it. There was only venom in my veins ?C the one thing that would inevitably bring Bella to her death. Death. No, this couldn't be the end. Her knowledge wouldn't condemn her, I refused. Would this be Carlisle's conclusion, just like it had been for the rest of the family? I would fight against them, if this is what they decided. ââ¬Å"Edward?â⬠Esme prodded. I had to tell them what she knew; no doubt Rosalie will make sure they were aware if I didn't confess this soon. It's better if they hear it from me, but still, the words wouldn't escape my lips. How do you confess a betrayal? It's much more difficult than I thought it would be. Feeling guilty, Edward? Rosalie sneered mentally. What a surprise! I can't believe you. Once again I had to shove Rosalie's thoughts from my mind. The barrier was harder to put into place when my concentration was being pulled in so many directions. Besides the aggressively hostile nature of Rosalie, everyone else was silent, the dead air making it evident that everyone was eavesdropping at this ultimate of pivotal moments, surely waiting to hear my betrayal, or ultimately deciding her fate for me. None of them dared to think it. Not now. Not after I had already fought so hard to keep her alive. I inhaled a generous gulp of air. Esme's anxious look continued to grow deeper. What is it? Please tell us, she thought tentatively. Only a brief second had passed before I finally bowed my head downward as if I were admitting a great shame and delivered the words I was terrified would hurt my family. Judas had nothing on me. I sunk into the nearest chair. ââ¬Å"Bellaâ⬠¦well, sheâ⬠¦she knows, Carlisle.â⬠I had never struggled with words like I did when Bella was involved. His eyes grew wide, his thoughts in an uproar of intense confusion and concern. Bella knows? About us? She knows about us? â⬠¦ ââ¬Å"Edward, what is going on? Is everything okay? Should I be worried?â⬠Carlisle's thoughts spilled from his mouth like a stream of water, so rapid I didn't have time to respond to one of them. At the same time I brought my glance to his and he focused on my blameworthy expression. He observed my look and then reassured himself that I hadn't done something foolish. Boy was he wrong. This all happened in a tenth of a second. My mind still hadn't fully comprehended all his thoughts. Of course I shouldn't be worried, everything will be fine. Okay. Now, ââ¬Å"what exactly does Bella know?â⬠he asked, zealous. I ignored his enthusiasm at the prospect of Bella knowing our secret. Was it an act? Surely my words would cut deeper in a minute. He hadn't really had time to settle on the thought. ââ¬Å"She knows everything about me!â⬠About us, I amended internally. ââ¬Å"She put the pieces together and I justâ⬠¦I couldn't keep lying to her.â⬠I figured the truth would be better than lies right now. Honestly, I'm surprised he didn't tell her himself. Carlisle contemplated mentally. The way she has changed himâ⬠¦I can't describe it. She would be his perfect pairing. Why not change her? he murmured in thought. Excellent, Esme beamed. Was she excited about this news too? Was this not the huge betrayal I thought it would be? ââ¬Å"She is the best thing that has ever happened to you, Edward.â⬠Carlisle cut into my thoughts. ââ¬Å"I'm so glad she knows,â⬠he whispered softly to me. ââ¬Å"It was to be expected. But now, maybe it's time to move to the next step.â⬠My head snapped up. Esme nodded in agreement. ââ¬Å"Next step?â⬠I shouted. ââ¬Å"Move to the next step?â⬠Was this the conclusion? An immortal life? I couldn't be responsible for such a brutal act. It felt like a brick was sliding down my throat into the pit of my stomach. ââ¬Å"You want me to whatâ⬠¦ask her to die?â⬠I shot up like a bottle rocket. ââ¬Å"Ask her if she wished to be doomed to go to hell? Are you insane?â⬠The thought of her burning with the fiery thirst day by day or the first initial three days of begging for death as her veins burned with venom ?C my venom ?C nearly sent me over the edge. I was hoping beyond hope that this would not come to some sort of vote like what nearly happened after I saved her from the van. To make her into the appalling creature that I am or bring on her early deathâ⬠¦no, there is another option. There has to be. I looked to Carlisle. If anyone's opinion mattered it would be his. He froze for just a fraction of a second and then sighed heavily. I studied him for a few seconds, apprehension etched into my face, easily reflected in his golden eyes. Also, I could see my face from two viewpoints perfectly. There it was, my pain jerking down the corners of my lips. ââ¬Å"I can't imagine hurting her, bringing her to her death.â⬠ââ¬Å"If it's a matter of self controlâ⬠¦I can offer my services,â⬠Carlisle proposed. ââ¬Å"A vampire, forever frozen at seventeenâ⬠¦forever doomed to our existence.â⬠Carlisle flinched at my words. ââ¬Å"I just can'tâ⬠¦you can't! How can either of you possibly think her knowledge of our existence a good thing when this is the conclusion?â⬠I shouted. There were a few murmured agreements throughout the house. Jasper was quiet but thought the next step or death should be the only options. But, after Alice's request he seemed to try his best to keep his thoughts to himself. ââ¬Å"Who is to say she couldn't live out her mortal life?â⬠I paused, chagrin obvious in my tone. ââ¬Å"I haven't killed her.â⬠But I could. So easily. But you haven't killed her, you even saved her life, I thought to myself, the little devil sitting on my shoulder. Not yet, I amended. The guilt was plainly splayed across my face. Couldn't Carlisle tell I was scarcely clutching onto my humanity ââ¬â just barely by my fingertips when I was around the sweet seduction of Bella's blood and her enticing pulse? Each second around her was like crawling through the desert and happening upon water that was poisonous. So seductive. If being human is what you wish for her and you feel that you can't offer thisâ⬠¦then maybe this is the time to leave. Carlisle offered as a choice. He saw me flinch and changed tact. I just don't want you to make a mistake by denying yourself your true mate by keeping her human. He spoke silently to me.â⬠If you wish to keep her human, then that is your decision. We will not demand her death, or her transformation.â⬠Carlisle added, trying to calm my frenzied nerves. At the same time he was letting everyone in the house know this was his final word. And they are to abide by it. No deaths, no transformations. The end. ââ¬Å"You have amazing self control. I believe that you will make the right decision.â⬠Shock. Yes, that was the emotion I was feeling; stunned, surprised, astonishedâ⬠¦I looked up and stared at him incredulously. Even if I did decide to change her, I wouldn't have the strength to stop myself from drinking her dry. Just thinking about the luscious taste on my lips sent a shiver of pleasure down my spine. How could he possibly believe that this whole situation is a good idea? Dread flowed through my frozen veins as the thought of hurting the delicate flower of a girl, Bella, entered my mind. I tried to expunge the images that Alice had embossed into my brain, for they seemed to be coming to the surface at this conversation. I wasn't the only one surprised and outraged by his responses to it all, how easily Carlisle just accepted this bit of news like he knew it was going to happen all along. Rosalie, working on her car, had thrown a wrench down and walked away, muttering choice swear words under her breath. Jasper coughed ââ¬â something a vampire would never need to do ââ¬â while breaking part of the chess piece he was holding. He knew of the danger this could possibly cause us all. Then there were those two thoughts that were unsurprised, actually elated. Alice, for obvious reasons, predicted this future. She loved Bella, human or vampire. Esme, who didn't care if Bella had four fingers and crossed eyes, was smiling at me. Her thoughts were content, pleased at this news, even though a sturdier Bella, in her mind, would be the better choice. There was only one neutral thought. ââ¬Å"Next time we'll use your chess set,â⬠Emmett muttered to Jasper. Though, I knew if it came to sides, he would choose Rosalie's. Before I responded to Carlisle's words Esme's thoughts protruded into my head. I wonder when I can meet her. I turned and gave Esme a withering look. ââ¬Å"Why are you guys doing this to me?â⬠Derision was obvious in my voice. ââ¬Å"If I stay with herâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ I needed to leave her alone. She needs to live a mortal life, one that I can not offer her. ââ¬Å"I could kill her.â⬠My face screwed up in pain at the word kill. It's been months, Edward. She's still alive. You can do this, I have faith in you, Carlisle thought. My hands were trembling slightly as fear pulsed through me. Faith, I scoffed. Esme approached me swiftly and embraced me, all fear flooded from my body at her gentle touch. Carlisle approached me and Esme let go as he placed his hand on my shoulder and thought sympathetically; everything will be all right, son. It was silent for a minute, as everyone let the news sink in. ââ¬Å"So, what did you tell Bella?â⬠Carlisle asked, intrigued now. Our previous conversation was now in the distant past. Everything I was doing seemed so human lately. I sank lower into the chair as if it were my only support after being deflated. ââ¬Å"I didn't tell her, Carlisle, she guessed. She guessed everything, even my little talent of reading minds!â⬠Carlisle's thoughts were incoherent with surprise; his words spiraled together and were muddled so I continued. ââ¬Å"I only filled in the blanks, which were not many. She is much more perceptive than I realizedâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ My voice trailed off and I slumped even lower into the chair. I had made so many mistakes. I then remembered what she had told me about her trip to First Beach. ââ¬Å"Then her little friend Jacob Blackâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ Before I could get another word out Carlisle already knew exactly what had happen. Jacobâ⬠¦Black. Oh! ââ¬Å"The Quileute's?â⬠I nodded. Ohâ⬠¦ I see. He chuckled.â⬠I never thought it would be their side to break the treaty! Oh, of course, I know it couldn't have been meant like that, surely he doesn't think the stories are true.â⬠he shook is head. This house became silent, not a word or thought formed for several spiraling seconds. When the curtain of silent thoughts became louder then thoughts themselves, I finally looked up to try to interpret Carlisle's face since his mind had become nothing more than a bewildered mental humming. The astonishment on his alabaster face was humorous. Before I could make my mouth move to ask the question I seemed to be asking more and more lately, what are you thinking, Carlisle began to chuckle at full volume. He was truly taken aback, but this news hadn't bothered him at all. His mind was stunned into silence as flashes of Bella went through ââ¬â all from that almost tragic day with the van. I couldn't take the ever-growing silence emanating off the walls. ââ¬Å"What?â⬠I asked with irritation. Carlisle shot Esme a look. Go on,Esme thought while nodding to Carlisle to continue, as if he could read her thoughts. He finally spoke. ââ¬Å"How did she react?â⬠ââ¬Å"She said, ââ¬Ëit doesn't matter' what I am,â⬠my teeth gritted at the memory, and then my expression softened when I remembered the tears that welled up in her eyes at my reaction. Another mistake. ââ¬Å"She won't tell anyone?â⬠he asked. ââ¬Å"No. I trust her.â⬠At my look, he accepted my answer without a doubt. ââ¬Å"Edward, this cannot be a coincidence. There is a real change happening here.â⬠Carlisle chuckled once more. Esme put her arm around Carlisle and a large grin gradually spread across her face. My parents wereâ⬠¦ happy, excessively, even. I hadn't predicted the conversation going in this direction at all. I was given the impression that everything was happening very fast. The monster in me began backing into the darkest corners of my mind, gradually dissipating as I was becoming more and more human the more familiar I became with Bella. What should I do? I know what I should do; it was a matter of what I was going to do.I knew what the answer should be. I need to leave her alone. Even if I can cage the monster for the time, it is not likely I can keep him caged forever. Yes, I have my family for support, but that won't stop me from accidently hurting her. I had to leave, as Carlisle suggested. I placed my hand over my eyes and slouched even deeper in the chair. If I sunk down any lower I'd fall right off of it. Then thought of her deep chocolate brown eyes looking at me with tears as I said goodbye made my un-beating heart ache. The memory of her tear stained face flashed across my mind. Would she cry? If I left, would she even care? She shouldn't. I sighed. She really does embrace danger, or maybe the right word was Entice. I thought about Alice's vision. I pinched the bridge of my nose at the recollection. The more I thought about it the harder it was for me to imagine being alone with her without breaking or damaging her. Why did Alice put these thoughts in my head? I don't want to hurt Bella, but I don't know how much more I could take! Being in Bella's presence with the aroma, her warmthâ⬠¦so brave and trustingâ⬠¦ not touching her was going to become a problem. Her skin ââ¬â so softâ⬠¦electric. I started imaging her warm and cradled comfortably in my arms ââ¬â lightly touching her face and pulling my hands through her hair. Before I could get too deep into that daydream I had to make a decision and fast. Regardless of what my decision should be, I was a selfish creature and refused to go. Leaving the girl isn't an option, I decided. She was a danger to herself and she needed me to protect her, I lied effortlessly. I shook my head as I ultimately determined I was still going to take her to the meadow. I will give her the chance to see me for who I am, I promised myself. Maybe she would finally learn how dangerous I am and run away screaming. I won't kill her, though. I love her. I tried to convince myself that love was enough. The love I felt for her was so exquisite it was nearly pain because I knew there were only two options left for her now. No, those won't be her only options. I will make this work. Three options. She could grow old and live out her life, but with me in tow. Only a few seconds had passed during my reprieve. Carlisle and Esme looked fixedly at me. Their confidence in me was overwhelming. They honestly believed in me, trusted that I wouldn't hurt her. Maybe Judas did have the corner on the betrayal market. As I saw the conviction in their faces, something deep inside of me settled. I stood up, surveyed their loving faces and the inner workings of my brain and my non-beating heart finally accepted her fate. Option three. She will live, I'll look after her and she will live, I determined. As long as I was around, no one would ever harm her because I would break them limb from limb if they even attempted, or even if they possibly thought it. Her vampire protector. Forever. ââ¬Å"It seems I can't stay away from her.â⬠I grimaced, but deep inside I was glowing. I don't want him to stay away from her; he's been a different person since she came into his life,Esme thought cheerfully. Carlisle grinned, his thoughts in sync with Esme. I sighed, but the sound wasn't as pained as before. It was almostâ⬠¦joyous. Striding swiftly from the room I realized it was no longer silent in the house. I could hear faint mutterings from Rosalie. Instantly I shoved her constant jeering from my mind. Deep down, Rosalie's problem with Bella really was pure jealousy. She hated that Bella was human because she wanted to be human. But I thought her warm, trusting humanness was Bella's best quality. Edward!Alice bellowed from her head while skipping up the stairs towards me. The cloudy, blurry vision from earlier today was instantly clear. No longer did she see Bella's lifeless form lying in the bracken of the forest floor. My eyes no longer glowed that ominous red. When she reached me at the top of the stairs she grinned widely while practically jumping on me to wrap her tiny arms around my neck. ââ¬Å"Thank you, Edward!â⬠Alice was jubilant. I nodded and returned her hug, releasing her quickly because I was on a mission. Have fun at Bella's. I suppose you won't tell her hi for me, will you? For the first time since I entered the house this afternoon, my lips twitched up into a smile, completely opposite from my previous grimace. My stomach was doing back flips at the thought of being with her again. I couldn't stand being away from her any longer. I dashed through the forest towards her house as if someone was lighting a fire beneath my feet. As I took off I heard faded thoughts from Alice. I wonder what happened to change the vision? I hope Edward starts letting me hang out with her. Just two more daysâ⬠¦She was counting down. Then I saw images of her dressing a blushing Bella up and playing with her hair like she was a doll. I rolled my eyes, but instantly craved for this to come true. I was sitting in the rocking chair in Bella's room. Her warm delicious scent was swirling around me and I was sucking it slowly into my lungs with each breath. I was willing myself to stay away from her. A feat much harder than one would realize. Tonight, she was not sleeping soundly. I watched as she tangled herself into the blankets early on in the evening. I stood. Realizing I was unable to help her, I sat. The chair was my prison, holding me in my seat. She was the dessert across the table from a kid who had to eat broccoli. The temptation would never go away, yet each second I grew stronger against my will to rush over and hold her. I couldn't allow myself to do something so foolish. It was about her now. What she wants, what she needs. I had to toss my selfishness away as best I could, even though my presence was selfish enough. She tossed again. I got up once more, my hands reaching out like I could help. My touch was too coldâ⬠¦wrong. I seated myself back into my prison. I sighed. With the quick intake of air the burning persisted in my dry throat. Each breath brought me pleasure and torture. Mainly torture, though her scent reminded me of how alive she is. ââ¬Å"Edwardâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ she mumbled in her sleep. This was not the first time this evening that she murmured my name in her sweet magical voice. Each sound or movement was watched by me as she continued to tangle herself in the sheets. I couldn't help but worry that she wasn't having a good dream. I was a monster after all. She woke a few times in the night, startled from her dream ?C or nightmare ?C but I was stealthy enough to hide. She never caught me but I wondered what she would think if she did. Would she finally scream? Would she shriek at the sight of the peeping tom that I had become? Would she turn her deep gaze towards me and beg me to leave and never come back?Anguish fell over me at the thought. This must be why I continued to hide every time I saw her eyes flutter. She tossed again, holding her pillow tightly while a small sigh escaped her lips. ââ¬Å"Edwardâ⬠¦mmmmm.â⬠Once again my heart leapt at the sound of my name on her breath. As the night progressed she settled into a deeper sleep, finally calm and unmoving. In the earlier hours of the morning I saw her shudder and watched as goose bumps arose on her skin. Without thought I was standing, walking over to her, leaning down, hand out stretched before my mind finally caught up with my actions. Indecision was deep in my thoughts. Another breath. More fiery thirst. I wasn't sure if it was the monster or my protective side, but without thinking I reached out to unravel her blanket to cover her. As I slowly moved the blanket over her I accidently touched her arm. Or was it an accident? It was if a million little electrodes sent pleasant shocks down my spine. I closed me eyes to take in her aroma. She was softâ⬠¦warm. I quickly held my breath but realized that if I were going to stay with her that I had to overcome my thirst, my ever growing desire to crush her to my body and dig my teeth deep into her neck. Another breath. My mouth was instantly full of venom. The monster inside of me was clawing at my chest bones, trying to break free of my body and drink the most delicious blood that ever existed. I grabbed at my chest trying to push the monster back in when suddenly I felt something vibrate. It was my phone. Alice. I swallowed the pool of venom pouring into my mouth. Leaping out of her window I answered the phone. I opened my mouth to speak but before I could say hello Alice began pleading in her bell voice. ââ¬Å"Edward! Please!â⬠My hand automatically met the bridge of my nose. She was my favorite and the most irritating of my family. She continued without pause. ââ¬Å"I keep getting flashes of you killing Bella! If you kill her I will be very upset. I haven't even had the opportunity to talk to her,â⬠her voice was petulant. I gritted my teeth and breathed in the light morning air around me. The fresh air cleared my head making the monster retreat. How had I let things get out of hand? Why did I have to put my hand in the cookie jar? ââ¬Å"Alice,â⬠I breathed. She interjected. ââ¬Å"Please, just be careful, Edward! Your future has been changing erraticallyâ⬠¦I never know what is going to happen with you anymore.â⬠I could almost hear her pout. I sighed because she was right. The easy flow of my future had taken a wild spin and even I couldn't tell her what my plans were from day to day anymore. ââ¬Å"I won't hurt her, Alice,â⬠I said with chagrin. ââ¬Å"You better not!â⬠It was a command. ââ¬Å"I'll see you soon.â⬠She hung up the phone. I groaned. Was I really that close? I didn't think I was. Looking back up at her window I decided it was okay for me to check on her ?C just one more time ?C tonight. Her small chest was moving up and down evenly along with her steady breath. She was still sound asleep. Safe. Her protector kept her free from danger. But didn't protect her from himself, I growled internally. I was going to have to work on that. The light of a new day began to peak over the tops of the trees, sending blue tints across the grey clouds that accompanied the sky. My mind was racing around with what this new day would bring me as I was soaring through the forest at a ferocious velocity back towards home. The questions I would ask herâ⬠¦the responses I would receive. To just dive in and understand her mind, to know what she was thinking. My thirst instantly became secondary to her knowing mind. My curiosity was aching like a thirst. Thirst, I thought warily. I needed to hunt. I needed more blood to help dilute the intense sensations that came over when I was around Bella. I'd do it now, while I was out ?C one more time ?C just in case it wasn't true after all, that my ravenous desire to have her was second to her. I closed my eyes, letting my nose take over. Deer, I groaned. Ugh. I still raced towards it and quenched my ever burning throat, letting the warm blood soak into my dry and frozen throat. Gluttonous. That is what I had become. If I shook myself you might even hear the blood slosh around in me. But, there was no blood that would ease this acheâ⬠¦this hollow yearning. I pushed the animal off of me with disgust and realized my need for a shower and fresh clothes. When I arrived at home I ran into Rosalie in the garage. Great, I thought. Exactly what I need. ââ¬Å"You know this is going to cause problems, Edward,â⬠she hissed my name. ââ¬Å"Not now, Rosalie.â⬠I growled back. ââ¬Å"You are so self-centered, haven't you thought about what this will do to our family?â⬠she bit back at me. Of course I had thought about it. Wasn't it obvious that it was eating at me, every second of every day? It was only earlier that I admitted my betrayal. She must be bored ?C this argument was getting old. ââ¬Å"Rosalie, go jump off a cliff,â⬠I snapped back at her, not like that would do much to her; maybe ruffle her hair and clothes ââ¬â that should piss her off. I chuckled at my internal thought. Ignoring her jibes and muttering I continued to walk inside. Everyone else was pointedly ignoring me. It was apparent that they were all acting busy. I saw through the pretense but I was relieved they were leaving me alone. I was swiftly dressed and back at Bella's before Charlie left, parking my car around the block so it would be out of sight. I raced towards her house, hoping to hear something new today. Lurking in the shadows outside her house, the feeling of being a stalker came over me again. Was this how I would forever live my life ?C being a crazy vampire stalker? Catching the tail end of their conversation I reprimanded myself for letting Rosalie distract me, taking away a considerable amount of my time. My stalking time, I laughed mirthlessly at myself. Feeling a little belligerence because I failed to get back before her thoughts were being spoken, I listened with more effortâ⬠¦.eavesdropping on their conversation more tentatively. ââ¬Å"I'm not going to the dance, Dad.â⬠I heard the stubbornness in Bella's tone as I imagined her vulnerable face creasing with anger. Her kitten anger. I chuckled. Today seemed to be a mostly silent thought day for Charlie, but the tenor of his mind was still leaking out. Fear raged through him at the possibility that none of the boys liked her at school. What was wrong with his daughter? These thoughts were more pointless than he realized. If only he knew what all the males at school thought about herâ⬠¦ Even worse ââ¬â what she liked: a vampire. ââ¬Å"Didn't anyone ask you?â⬠Charlie asked, concerned. ââ¬Å"It's a girl's choice.â⬠Bella's voice was exultant with smugness. I could almost hear the triumph in her voice as she realized she won this argument. Once again I imagined her face; her chin jutting out, her lips pursing. Another chuckle. Oh, how light my heart felt every second I was around her. ââ¬Å"Oh.â⬠Charlie huffed, disappointed. His thoughts turned a different direction while he contemplated why she didn't like anyone at school. She did like someone thoughâ⬠¦me. My heart leapt, my desires raced, my body ached to hold her. Enough, I ordered. Hadn't I gone too far already today? The clattering of dishes rang out into the yard before Charlie emerged from the house. I watched as he waved, saying goodbye to Bella. I raced towards my car. As soon as Charlie drove off I was in the driveway waiting for her, anxious that one day she will walk out of the house, see me waiting for her and then will deny me her company. It pained me to think like this but I was still not completely sure of her feelings. Her hidden thoughts make things more interesting, I sighed, but they also drive me insane. Bella came out of the house with a slight skip in her step as she turned around to lock the door, leaving the main dead bolt unlocked. I noticed everything about her, even the inconsequential. As I watched her carefully, I almost exited the car to give her a hand, worried she might fall at her pace but she slowed when she saw the silver Volvo waiting for her in the drive. I felt a quick sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach. Well, I should remain in the car; she obviously was considering her options at this point. More pain, my burning desire feared to be extinguished. She continued her unhurried pace in my direction. What was she thinking? Did she not want to ride with me today? She stopped with her hand on the door, wavering. Aggravation flooded me in waves I'd never felt before, not at Bella, but the fact that I didn't know what she was thinking. I tried to probe her mind once again, and reached a solid and impermeable wall. My light mood quickly faded at my new fear. Her hand reached out to grab the handle. I exhaled heavily at the relief that now flooded me. Finally, she decided to ride with me, I hoped, considering she was now opening the door. Her head ducked under the roof of the car and I greeted her with a smile while I waited for her scent to assault me. She finally sat in the passenger seat and shut the door, sending a hot wave of freesia in my direction. Daggers, white hot knivesâ⬠¦burning. I took in a large breath, closing my eyes. Her scent did exactly what I expected. The warmth of her body and her pulse emitted the loveliest smell and the scent wrapped around me as it scorched down my throat. I opened my eyes to see the particles of air swirling around me that were now doused with her aroma. My eyes finally met hers. ââ¬Å"Good Morning,â⬠I said after swallowing my thirst. ââ¬Å"How are you today?â⬠How was she? What were her dreams about? Did she miss me? There were countless quantities of things I wanted to inquire about. My questions distracted me from my thirst more than anything else. I suppressed a sigh. ââ¬Å"Good, thank you,â⬠she smiled. Smiling, that was good. I surveyed her face and could tell she didn't sleep well because she had large circles under her eyes. And I stayed in her room all night as she tossed in her sleep, I added mentally. No need to inform her of my nightly visits, though. Once again I became frustrated because I couldn't hear her knowing mind. What kept her up at night? What made her toss and turn and say my name? It never appeared like she was having a nightmare, or maybe I was just trying to convince myself of this. What else could possibly be making her so restless if not scary monsters that actually exist?Maybe I was just fooling myself. ââ¬Å"You look tired,â⬠I pointed out to continue her talking. I took in another breath and was instantly intoxicated by her scent. My mouth watered, I was nearly salivating. No mistakes, I ordered. ââ¬Å"I couldn't sleep.â⬠She looked like she was confessing to something and then hid behind her curtain of hair. Keep it light. ââ¬Å"Neither could I,â⬠I teased as I turned the key to start the engine. She laughed and the sound was harmonious. ââ¬Å"I guess that's right. I suppose I slept just a little bit more than you did.â⬠ââ¬Å"I wager you did,â⬠I returned her smile; relieved the conversation was going so well. Another ?C deeper ?C breath soared down my throat this time and I bit down hard on my cheek. The tantalizing smell was luxurious, painfully pleasurableâ⬠¦a rich profusion, opulent. The elaborate mix of her enticing scent was the only thing I ever wanted to breathe in, though, at the same time I craved the fresh air outsideâ⬠¦just to clear my mind. I could literally stick my tongue out and taste her on the air; it was so saturated with her aroma. Oh, who cares about the pain, she was here with me and that was all I wanted, I told myself. No mistakes! I took in a few more gulps of air while the monster clawed angrily at my throat. He was so close to the edge that I was using all my concentration now to fight him back. ââ¬Å"So what did you do last night?â⬠she asked, intrigued. She instantly scared the monster back into the darkness with just the sound of her voice. She's cleverâ⬠¦but not clever enough, it was my turn to ask the questions ?C as I had made clear the day before. There were so many questions that were left unanswered and I had to know. A smile broke across my face and I chuckled. ââ¬Å"Not a chance. It's my day to ask questions,â⬠I said enthusiastically. ââ¬Å"Oh, that's right. What do you want to know?â⬠her forehead creased. What was going on in her mind? She looked worried and I almost reached out to press my finger in between her eyebrows to smooth out the worry lines. Keep it simple, light. ââ¬Å"What's your favorite color?â⬠That was simple enough. She rolled her eyes. Maybe too simple. ââ¬Å"It changes from day to day,â⬠she smiled. I knew I was going to have to drag everything out of her, no surprise there. ââ¬Å"What's your favorite color today?â⬠I asked gruffly. ââ¬Å"Probably brown,â⬠she said, looking down at her brown shirt. Really? I had to stop myself from snorting and instantly dropped my serious gaze, the pretense no longer needed. ââ¬Å"Brown?â⬠I asked skeptically. ââ¬Å"Sure. Brown is warm. I miss brown. Everything that's supposed to be brown ?C tree trunks, rocks, dirt ?C is all covered up with squashy green stuff here,â⬠she complained. At her answer, I was able to add another thing to my list: she was self-effacing. She wasn't easily led by other people, choosing her color because of what she liked, not what the populace agreed upon. Suddenly I remembered her muttering, ââ¬Å"It's too green,â⬠when she was sleeping one evening and tried not to chuckle aloud. ââ¬Å"You're right,â⬠I decided, excitement racing through me at all the thoughts I would unlock today. Even learning this little thing about her made me reel with glee. Okay, back to business. I was abruptly serious again. ââ¬Å"Brown is warm.â⬠Brown was in fact one of my favorite colors, too. I don't know why it took me so long to become aware of this; her deep brown eyes and long brown hair. I hesitated for an instant, not wanting to spoil the moment, but feelings I had never felt before I met Bella were surfacing. My hand twitched, wanting to reach over and pull her hair from her face, so I could see the beauty that lied beneath. To just lift her chin slightly, turning it in my direction so I could try to read the deep depths of her eyesâ⬠¦ Enough. It would be wrong for me to do it, to place her warm face in my cold hands. The warmth. If I just slightly raised her chin, I could meet her half wayâ⬠¦place my lips to hers. Enough, I ordered again, but it was too late. My hand was out stretched, reaching towards her as I pulled her hair behind her shoulder, gently. Some of the lose strands spilled over my hand. Enough! I dropped my hand instantly. No mistakes! I could feel the warmth coming off of her skin, her fragrance was enveloping, and her hair was soft like silk. My urge to press my cold hard lips to her delicate soft ones had not evaded me. Stop there, I scolded myself. No more errors. You mustn't be so selfish, I reprimanded. We pulled into the school parking lot but this didn't mean that my questioning was overâ⬠¦that my desires were gone. Keep it light, I reminded myself. ââ¬Å"What music is in your CD player right now?â⬠I asked. She thought for a moment, her eyes un-focusing, looking up. ââ¬Å"Linkin Park.â⬠Her eyes met mine again. Hum, interesting choice. I reached into a compartment under my CD player and after rummaging through the debris I pulled out the same exact CD. ââ¬Å"Debussy to this?â⬠I raised an eyebrow. She just grinned at me. It was infectious. I returned her smile. It was time for school to start and we had to part ways. Luckily I could locate her no matter where she was, jumping from mind to mind. I was listing questions to ask her while I waited for the hours away from her to pass. Purgatory had now become a small slice of heaven. Watching her interact with other humans only added more questions to my ever growing list. I wanted to know everything about her. Was her responses what she was really thinking or was she replying with what they wanted to hear? My list grew. I made sure to meet up with her in between every class and stroll along side her while she talked; absorbing the information like a snake soaks up the heat from the sun. During our short walks I was able to unleash some of the questions from my ever growing list. Her every expression, body language, and replies were all-encompassing and intriguing. I was gradually learning each of her little quirks and thoughts. As I continued to unlock the mystery that was Isabella Swan, I learned something new. She wasn't just good; she was virtuousâ⬠¦above me. I looked at the crowd in the hallway. Above them all. The day when I could question her nonstop had finally arrived and I was entirely full of a bright glowing light. As each moment passed I was deeply afraid she would realize I was below her, insignificant compared to her greatness. She still ate with me at lunch, or she ate, I questioned. Sometimes, I got so excited with the information being spilled from her that I began spitting out the questions so fast that she was almost breathless trying to respond to them all. It was hard to control myself. It was like someone switched on the computer and I was accessing her hard drive, absorbing the knowledge of her mind that she kept locked up nice and secure. Then, something miraculous happened. Or, by my standards it was miraculous. Because who could possibly like a vampire? During our questioning I asked her what her favorite gemstone was and she blurted out topaz immediately and then her skin turned an appetizing color of red. Automatically, I breathed in a gluttonous amount of air and sighed. Why was she blushing? I begged her to enlighten me as to why she was embarrassed by her answer. ââ¬Å"Tell me,â⬠I begged. ââ¬Å"It's the color of your eyes today,â⬠she sighed and I watched her look down while the blush on her cheeks became a brilliant red again. She loved me, too. Like I said ?C a miracle. Another thing to add to my list: she was passionate. Joy rushed me; almost flipping me over my seat at the feelings of deep affection that warmed me, almost making me feel human. Almost. I suddenly thanked whatever force brought her to me. And then, surprising me even more, she elaborated on her answer. ââ¬Å"I suppose if you ask me in two weeks I'd say onyx.â⬠Her face turned even a darker shade of pink. I ignored the thirst, easily wiping it away like a bug on my windshield. Was she finally opening up? I could feel the spring in my step, the instant craving to bound over the table and bring her into my armsâ⬠¦to kiss her warm lips. She gave me a face like she was bracing for something. Was she waiting for the fury that radiated off of me when I realized how engrossed she was with a vampire and the fact that she just didn't care? I'd forever hate myself for my poor reactions in Port Angelesâ⬠¦for making her cry. When the lunch break was over we walked to Biology class. I wanted to reach out and seize her handâ⬠¦her warm ?C inviting ?C hand looked very welcoming to my own. She was next to me but I was feeling detached, like our fingers should forever be interlocked. Stop it, I thought. No mistakes. And holding her would be a mistake. We would be continuing the movie in Biology class today which I wasn't thrilled about. Yesterday the electricity in the room was encompassing us. I wasn't sure I would be able to not touch her while she sat so close to me in the dark room where the electricity flowed freely between us. Each little zing practically making me automatically reach out towards her. We took our seats beside each other and I knew the warm room would soon fill with Bella's scent. The heater turned on and I was waiting to embrace it, to bring it deeper into my lungs so I could revel in the delicious scent, let it intoxicate me. I've never been drunk, but if I had to guess, I'd say her scent made me quite tipsy. Every moment that passed by when I was with Bella was the most painful and pleasant. Though the fire I felt in my throat didn't dissipate, her aroma was something I continued to embrace. Over time her scent had become less over powering which helped the monster stay securely caged in my chest. Or maybe being around her all the time helped? Had my constant presence in her life helped to make the thirst dissipate? Each moment, the thirst was becoming more manageable with my familiarity with her scent. The lights dimmed for the movie and I moved my chair a little farther away from hers this time. I saw her eye my movement with sadness, but it was better if I don't entice my senses too much, even though the space didn't matter much to these new feelings I had. The need to reach out and hold her hand, or maybe put my arm around her was nearly overwhelming. No mistakes, I fought internally. She would probably be repulsed by how cold my skin is. She would feel the hardness of my body and maybe then she would realize the monster I am. Would she be terrified then? No matter how far away I moved from Bella in this warm little room I could sense her and feel the current in the air around us. I watched her as she leaned forward, folding her arms on the desk and resting her chin on them. Not once did I look away from Bella. I watched as she twitched occasionally and wondered what was bothering her. Did she want to touch me too? If she did, it would only make it that much more difficult for me to not give her what she wants ?C to bring her into my arms and hold her securely to my chest like I did the day I saved her from the van. Hah! He moved away from her. Mike sneered in our direction. Guess things aren't going so well in Cullen land after all. This enraged me beyond belief and made it that much more difficult to keep my hands off Bella. I wanted to protect her from his thoughts; I wanted to show him that she was mine. But again, I had to remind myself of what a horrible mistake I was about to make as my arm twitched in her direction. I folded my arms securely across my chest attempting to keep the monster caged and trying to hold my hands at bay. If I were not a vampire, I would have crushed my own bones from crossing my arms so tightly. I was trying to hold back my other desires, now, as they burned and begged for me to just reach over and grab her up into my arms. The fantasy was beginning to spin wildly out of control. Enough! When the movie was over I saw her sit up. She was gripping the desk so hard that I saw her fingers go from white to pink as the blood rushed back into them. I watched as the blood swirled under her clear skin. I was internally struggling, trying not to caress her, hoping she hadn't hurt herself by her deathly grip on the desk. The class was dismissed and I stood up and waited for her to get to her feet. I grabbed her books and walked her to gym. What was she thinking now? The questions burning inside me were not the questions I was going to raise today. Do you love me too? came to mind. I sighed as my curiosity was beginning to burn as hot as the thirst in my throat. As I was walking with her I was fighting the urge to reach out and hold her hand, again. The urge was becoming unbearable. My thirst was now second to my new desires. I was walking at her pace hoping I could convince myself that all of my cravings had to take a backseat to Bella's needs. She is so frail and breakable. The internal conflict was becoming regular. When we finally reached the gym I still hadn't completely made up my mind. I was totally and utterly unsure of my path. When she turned to look at me with her deep communicative eyes any commitment I had crumbled to pieces. She looked so glorious that my arm was raised, hand out, and caressing her face from her temple down to her jaw without my consent. A deep fervor brought new sensations down my spine. A tingling feeling rushed through my veins, entering my heart, expanding it with just the thought of my affection. As soon as I realized what I was doing I dropped my hand, turned around and staggered away. Any semblance of my good nature persona was probably crushed at my rude goodbye. Heck, I didn't even say goodbye. What in the world were you thinking? I thought angrily at myself. She didn't seem to mind though. She might have even leaned a little into my touch, the devilish side of me thought. Wow, her instincts were backwards. Who would want to be touched by something so cold? As I was walking I started peeking into peoples' minds in her gym class. After what happened last time in gym class I had to admit I was slightly anxious that she might injure herself again. To imagine her warmth dissipating nearly crippled me. I wanted to stay out of Mikes mind but he was always paying so much attention to Bella. As much as I hated him, I appreciated him for always paying attention, but loathed him for unlocking some of her secrets before I did. Reaching class I sat next to Emmett. I really hate Cullen, he is such a freak. Mike was thinking in irritation. What does she see in him? He's such a tool. Mike thought scathingly while playing badminton. Well, things did seem a little cool between them in Biology. At his thoughts I almost shot out of my seat in anger. He was mentally picturing fighting with me and winning Bella's affections. Suddenly, the thought of this feeble human trying to fight me was comical and I was trying very hard to suppress laughter. Emmett stared at me as he watched the many expressions flicker across my face. I ignored him because I was busy watching Bella in gym. Mike and Bella didn't speak, and I had to admit it was rather delightful to see him sweat over it. I really didn't like the way he thought about her, or the way he fantasized about being with her. I started to imagine all the ways I could torture him. I smiled at the wistful thought but I needed to banish that idea from my mind quickly before that daydream got too out of control. What is so funny? Emmett was staring at me, smiling. It was clear he wanted to know what was going on by his raised eyebrow, no mind reading necessary. I knew he was having a hard time with my situation with Bella. It wasn't because he cared, it was because of Rosalie. She was being difficult. If anything, he was having an enjoyable time with the situation minus Rosalie. Emmett was learning to love humans because he thought they were so hilarious. I grinned at him and whispered too low for human ears to hear. ââ¬Å"Mike is thinking of fighting me,â⬠I chuckled low. Emmett's eyes grew tight as his smile widened. Now he was trying to stifle a laugh. Emmett always loved a fight, but that one would be too easy. We could just put him in a room with Rosalie. She has been very irritated lately, Emmett couldn't stop from laughing this time. He pictured Rosalie in a room with Mike. In this image, Mike was pathetically trying to fight off a very powerful and pissed off Rosalie. Mike wouldn't stand a chance. I grinned widely at the thought, another chuckle escaping my lips. Ms. Goff looked for the culprit of the laughing and passed over us quickly. Just like the other teachers, they all thought us to be perfect students. Who is interrupting my class? What could possibly be so funny? She thought angrily. I arrived outside the gym before Bella had exited, practically bouncing on the balls of my feet. My desires started flaring up again when she finally walked through the doors and her eyes met mine. A smile crept up her elegant face. She was happy to see me, too. I don't deserve her. I couldn't help but smile back. It was all I could do to not grab her up into my arms and hug her. No mistakes. Especially after the one I made before her gym class. Her scent enveloped me, and the monster reared up, but the desire to hold her over powered the monster and he was pushed into the dark again. Just another stupid bug on my windshield. My body was taking charge without my permission when it came to acquiring what I desired most with Bella. To preoccupy my time I decided to start my questioning again. I drove her to her house while unlocking the mysteries of her mind the whole all way there. I parked in her driveway while our conversation continued. We were so engrossed in our exchange that Bella didn't seem to notice we had stopped. After sitting in the car for quite some time I noticed that she never tried to exit. I was bathing in her aroma and letting the hollow yearn in my stomach and the dry dull ache of my throat remind myself of the monster that I am. I started asking her questions about her past and I became instantly terrified. Did I really want to know what was lurking in her past? Was there another boy? Someone she had to leave behind? Someone who could hold her, embrace her, care for her without having the desire to drink her dry of life? The fear behind this thought nearly crippled me so I decided I would ask her later about previous boys she dated. Skipping over the subject I asked her why she loved Arizona. She explained it to me in great detail, excited to answer this one. The way she talked about the place was almost like she loved it, just like I loved her. She used her hands to describe things. It was like I unlocked her voice box. Her thoughts were finally being freed from her mind. When she was done answering I already had another question in mind. I asked her what her room was like and she began telling me about it in detail. Of course I already knew exactly what it looked like; dotted with shoes, tangles of covers on her bed, closet lacking jumbles of clothes, piles of books and an old computer that at first glance you wouldn't think would work. I couldn't help myself. I had to be near her and asking the inconsequential seemed to be the best way. I felt so alone without her around. When did she become my life? How did she become my life? ââ¬Å"Are you finished?â⬠she asked with relief in her voice when I didn't spit out another query. Finished? ââ¬Å"Not even close ?C your father will be home soon.â⬠It was more of a reminder for me, not for her. She looked out the window quickly like she was wondering where the sun went. ââ¬Å"How late is it?â⬠she asked, a little panic in her voice. She glanced at the clock and surprise crossed her face. ââ¬Å"It's twilight,â⬠I answered. I looked out the windshield and realized another day was over. ââ¬Å"It's the safest time of day for us. The easiest time. But also the saddest, in a wayâ⬠¦ the end of another day, the return of the night. Darkness is so predictable, don't you think?â⬠I grinned at her, trying to remind myself to keep it light. ââ¬Å"I like the nightâ⬠she announced. ââ¬Å"Without the dark we would never see the stars,â⬠she frowned and looked out the window. ââ¬Å"Not that you see them here much,â⬠she finished sarcastically. Her tone caught me off guard and I laughed. Crap, her father. I heard Charlie a few streets away. ââ¬Å"Charlie will be here in a few minutes. So, unless you want to tell him you will be with me Saturdayâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ I raised an eyebrow teasingly. I wanted her to tell him because it would give me a reason to bring her back. It would keep my new desires in checkâ⬠¦my thirst, my ever growing need to kidnap her and never bring her home again. ââ¬Å"Thanks but no thanks,â⬠she replied airily. There she went again, embracing danger. She began gathering her books, looking a little uncomfortable. Did I say something wrong? Was it the look on my face? She turned and looked at me. ââ¬Å"So, is it my turn tomorrow, then?â⬠she asked. She still wanted to see me tomorrow! I rejoiced. ââ¬Å"Certainly not!â⬠I said in mock rage. It felt so good to be light and teasing around her. She made my skin sing. ââ¬Å"What more is there?â⬠she said, perplexed. There was everything more. I wanted to know everything about this girl, every detail of her life. ââ¬Å"You'll find out tomorrow.â⬠I teased. I reached across her ?C before thinking about it ?C to open her door. Her warmth washed over me and it took every bit of my brain to concentrate on not leaning over and letting my desires take control. I heard her heart start to beat rapidly. It skipped a few beats and I felt her breath on me. I achedâ⬠¦I yearned for her. No mistakes! How much could I take before I did something I regretted? A thought startled me back into reality. I hope Charlie is home. I'm ready to watch the game. It sure has been a while since I've seen him, hope he's not still mad at me. I froze with my hand on the door handle. ââ¬Å"Not good,â⬠I muttered. I clenched my teeth together; it was Billy Black. ââ¬Å"What is it?â⬠She stared at me trying to read my face. Well, I knew I was going to have to let her out of the car eventually, but not while the Blacks were here. I wanted to take her and run. What other kind of stories could they fill her mind with? ââ¬Å"Another complication.â⬠I said glumly. I grabbed the door handle and pushed it open. The air outside blew swiftly into the car and brought her scent with it. I was instantly ravenous and moved quickly away from her, trying to shove the monster back in my chest with the movement. Stay Bella I wanted to beg but she really did need to just leave me alone. I knew I wouldn't let her leave me alone though, not after discovering that she was the most astounding creature I had ever known. I suppressed a sigh as the Blacks headlights flashed across her gorgeous face. ââ¬Å"Charlie's around the corner,â⬠I warned her. She got out at once. Sheets of rain were pelting down on my windshield. Odd, I didn't notice it was raining until she opened the door. I could see her squinting through it towards the Black's car. She must not know who it is. I stared right through the headlights seeing very clearly. I could hear Jacob Blacks thoughts now and he was irritating me immediately. Oh, it's Bella! I wonder if there is something wrong with her truck. I should take a look at it, maybe make something up that would take me a long time to fix so I could spend more time with her. Man, she is so pretty. I wonder what she thinks of meâ⬠¦Who is that? He stared in my direction but he didn't recognize me. I had to get out of there. I squealed my tires and drove away more quickly than necessary. As I drove away I was struggling with myself about spying on her some more. Would the Blacks convince her to stay away from me? I was not oblivious to Billy's thoughts, I had heard his opinion many times in the past and he loathed me. But Bella was still alive, and she was still with me. She said it didn't matter to her that I was a vampire. I wonder what it will finally be, the thing that scares her away, I pondered. The thoughts of leaving her alone started to become fewer and farther between. What was her fate now? I was still worried about our trip to the meadow. I remembered Alice's vision before my resolve but they are so skewed that they could change the instant I decide to take a bite. Would I kill her? Would I take her into my arms, press my lips to her neck and sink my teeth into her, making her an immortal? I couldn't even imagine being able to stop. Would I ask Carlisle? No, she didn't deserve my fate. I would never take her soul. Heââ¬â¢d call my name and when I turned around I knew exactly how heââ¬â¢d look. Iââ¬â¢d still stare and smile back at his crinkly smiling eyes. à Heââ¬â¢d always have his sunglasses on top of his bald head.Immediately Iââ¬â¢d hand him my painfully heavy bag. At that moment all my homework troubles and test woes were over. Heââ¬â¢d ask me the usual about school and friends. Although he knew I was shy around other people and often bullied around, heââ¬â¢d still ask, ââ¬Å"How many kids did you beat today at recess?â⬠The irony of it always made me laugh. While he drove me home he always chatted like a chirpy bird. Heââ¬â¢d make his usual stop everyday. I knew what heââ¬â¢d say before leaving the car but I always looked forward to it. Heââ¬â¢d say conspicuously, ââ¬Å"Let me say a quick hello to my friendâ⬠. Iââ¬â¢dà know exactly why he stopped but Iââ¬â¢d play innoce nt.The stop meant he was getting candies from the store. Heââ¬â¢d return back with chocolates and colored candies smiling, and say, ââ¬Å"My friend sent these for youâ⬠. I canââ¬â¢t ever recall him not smiling. With the greed of a 6 year old Iââ¬â¢d peer into the big bag and immediately gobble the loot before the school bus even reached home.I remember this particular day spent with him. While I was sitting in the backseat of the school bus and gloating over my treasure and with my mouth still full of chocolates I exclaimed, ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢re the best uncle ever; you buy the best things even when I never ask you for themâ⬠. He looked back at me from the rearview mirror and smiled. But, I remember seeing something strange and wistful in his eyes. I couldnââ¬â¢t understand it then but he said, ââ¬Å"One day when youââ¬â¢re all grown up and going to university, I will pass you by on the street and I will call out to you but you wont recognize your Uncle Rob â⬠¦I will ask you donââ¬â¢t you remember me? But no mater how hard you try, you wonââ¬â¢t be able to remember meâ⬠.I was mad at Uncle Rob that day. I was angry at his confidence in the future that he had never seen. I reasoned with him as much as a six year old can. He stood firm. I explained to him again and again that I see him first thing in the morning when he drops me to school and last thing before he drops me back home. This will have to continue till Iââ¬â¢m sixty years old and donââ¬â¢t need to go to school. He laughed sadly and shook his head in disagreement. The school year ended and Uncle Rob stopped picking and dropping me from school. I remember laughing, arguing and played games with him. When I moved to another state at the end of the year I made a mental note to myself to remember him.I put a flag to his memory and engraved his image in the deep recesses of my mind. I promised to never forget him. Iââ¬â¢m almost 24 now and his memory is still flawless in my mind. But I wonder, if Iââ¬â¢m walking on the street and come across a man with those crinkly smiling eyes and I call out his name, will he remember me? à Mikehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16549845635989615112noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3593062285409250006.post-57088577691419147782020-01-02T08:10:00.001-08:002020-01-02T08:10:03.242-08:00Haircut Sports Clips Haircuts and Great Clips - Free Essay Example Sample details Pages: 5 Words: 1427 Downloads: 6 Date added: 2017/06/26 Category Marketing Essay Type Compare and contrast essay Did you like this example? I have been to both places based on some discount advertising they offered. At the end of the I ended up paying higher price than advertised and I felt deceived. After a few reviews on what other customers experience were with both companies, the reviews were not great and many of them have had same experience as I have. Airline: Delta Airlines and United Airlines Delta Airline Better ground (airport) services (check-in, gate areas, etc.) Easy upgrade and great customer service Better East coast and European route network. Punctual on time, fewer and shorter delays WiFi and Entertainment United Airline Quality food and more food (especially trans-con), and food served on shorter flights. Easy upgrade from any fare price (Premier Exec). Better West coast, trans-con, and Asian route network. Higher delays and poor on time performance WiFi and Entertainment Preference: I have flown with delta and United airlines and like the services of both companies. I will use any of the anytime I have to travel anywhere in the USA, but I will prefer Delta or United for international flights due to great customer experience I have with them on my international travel and will try United if anything should change. They have on-campus housing and Army ROTC programs are available at Ohio Dominican University. Franklin University Operates a trimester-based curriculum calendar system and offer only 23 majors. The most popular concentrations are Management, Business, Accounting and Finance, Marketing and Advertising, and Computer Science. Franklin University student retention rate is very low at 35% with a graduation rate of 39%. Average tuition prices are close to the nationwide median about $10,000 a year They also accept dual credits and credits for life experience (learned through independent study). Army ROTC programs are available at Franklin University. Preference: I will choose ODU over Franklin based on their course structure and location. I did a lot of searches and reviews on both school and the graduation rate was one factor I could not overlook. The fact the ODU was a religious school also played a role in my decision. From all the various factors that are influential to services buying decisions, the most often cited in the above examples are competitive pricing and quality of service. Consumers are always looking for great service at a reasonable price. Price is the number one factor consumer consider when buying a service. It is the money consumers pay for services in return for value and satisfaction. Consumers often determine if the service being offered actually meets their needs and requirements and also whether the service is worth the value of their money. This helps stirs up competition among sellers and it is important for Service Providers to understand what value means to potential consumers and how much mone y they are willing to sacrifice for a given service in return for value and satisfaction. Aside price, consumers need quality and credibility also affect services buying decision. Consumers want services that offer the greatest satisfaction and also meet their needs in the best way. Since every provider claims to sell the best service, potential consumers often compare services to determine which ones gives them the most value. In the case of Sport Clips and Great Clips, since the emphasis is on looks, consumers will choose the one that provide the best purchasing experience. Credibility is also important in consumers buying decisions. People want proof that other consumers have purchased the service and that the providers have built reputation overtime. They encourage sellers to provide information to show that similar consumers have struggled with their decisions but when they decided to purchase the service, they were happy with the results. Consumers often rely on reviews and comments made by previous customers. The more proof of information people get about a service, they are more open to buying that service knowing that other consumers bought the service and were happy with the result. Also the opinions of others or previous customers also affect the buying decision. Opinions of any kind are likely to encourage or discourage potential customers and increase their desirability about the service. When this happens, it lowers their resistance to the price and actually makes the product more appealing. Service providers often solicit opinions and testimonies letters from happy customers. Sometimes they show photographs of satisfied customers using their service to support their sales strategy. In the example of Delta and United Airlines, two of my friends used the service of these airlines for a trip to their summer vacations. Although both had great vacations, the other friend was disappointed with the service offered by United Airline. This experien ce is more likely to affect future decision when choosing between the two airlines. Finally, the way consumers make purchasing decisions have changed in todayââ¬â¢s business due to information availability on social media and internet search tools. Consumers also resort to reviews, survey results and comparison of services published in the consumer report. Personally, I have used consumer report and internet sources for information on service buying decision. An example is during the purchase of my last car, I used information from consumer report and internet search for price comparison, extended warranty and repair cost issue, additional discounts offered by the dealer, customer service and after-sale services. The consumer report information was very helpful in my decision making. However, a deeper literary analysis will show readers that the novel is much more than that. Fight Club is actually a cleverly written novel that contains many elements of Marxist and psychoanalytic theories throughout the storyline. Marxism is based on the concepts of Karl Marxââ¬â¢s theories that focuses on class relations and social conflict. On the other hand, psychoanalytic criticism stems from Sigmund Freudââ¬â¢s theories of psychology. The novel is best interpreted from a Marxist point of view because Palahniuk uses Fight Club as a means of expressing hisâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦His economic ideas and principles contributed to the establishment of many communist states. Marxists refer to socioeconomic class when discussing the class structure because economic power always incl udes social and political power as well (Tyson 50). There are two distinct social classes featured in Fight Club that constantly clash with one another: bourgeoisie and proletariat. The bourgeoisie consists of powerful, wealthy individuals who are well above the proletariat. These are the people who ââ¬Å"control the worldââ¬â¢s natural, economic, and human resourcesâ⬠(Tyson 50). On the other hand, the proletariat is made up of weaker individuals but hold a much larger amount. Even though they lack power, the proletariat make up for it in numbers. They are the ââ¬Å"majority of the global population who live in substandard conditions and who have always performed manual laborâ⬠(Tyson 50). Although not obviously mentioned, the proletariat is the ultimate source of bourgeoisie power as their labor allows the entire system to function. Without the proletariat, the bourgeoisie would cease to exist. The struggle to survive has kept the proletariat from fighting back. Fight Club does an excellent job at revealing many examples of social conflicts between the two classes. The whole basis of the story is centered on attempts to overthrow the upper class. In the scene where the Mikehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16549845635989615112noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3593062285409250006.post-1410228456801406162019-12-08T21:08:00.001-08:002019-12-08T21:08:03.226-08:00Betrayal and Loyalty free essay sample Throughout the play, Iago manipulates the other characters into betraying one another so that he can get his ultimate betrayal on Othello. Shakespeare uses Iago as the main portrayer of betrayal throughout the entire play. He betrays all the other characters, but his main focus is on Othello. Despite that, he ends up betraying all the people closest to him. Iagoââ¬â¢s betrayal starts off from the first scene page of the play right until the end. The audience learns Iagoââ¬â¢s motive through his monologue: ââ¬Å"Thus do I ever make my fool my pursel hate the moor, and it is thought abroad that ââ¬Ëtwixt my sheetsââ¬â¢ has done my office. I know not ifââ¬â¢t be true, but I, for mere suspicion in that kind will do as if for surety. â⬠Iago suspects that Othello has had an affair with his wife. However, Shakespeare makes Iagoââ¬â¢s motif very unclear; therefore, it can be argued that this is Iagoââ¬â¢s excuse and in actual fact he has no reason other than he simply hates Othello. Iago wants to destroy Othello because Othello promoted Casio as chief lieutenant instead of him, which is another reason why Iago wants to destroy him. Iago is one of Shakespeareââ¬â¢s most complex villains. Initially, we see Iagoââ¬â¢s character as pure evil, yet later we see him as a completely amoral person. Iago does not push aside his conscience to commit his evil plans, he simply lacks a conscience to begin with. Through Iago, Shakespeare shows us a character that acts against his reputation and betrays all this friends and loved ones. Through some careful thought out words and actions, Iago is able to manipulate others to do things in a way that benefits him and moves him closer to his ultimate goal. He is the main driving force of the play, pushing Othello and everyone towards their tragic end. Iago is smart. He is an expert judge of people as well as their character and uses this to his advantage. Iago is also quick on his feet, making him able to improvise when something unexpected occurs. Being as smart as he is, Iago is quick to recognize the advantages of trust and uses it as a tool to forward his main purpose. Throughout the story he is commonly known as the ââ¬Å"honest Iagoâ⬠. He even says himself, ââ¬Å" I am an honest manâ⬠. Trust is a very powerful emotion that is easily betrayed. Iago is a master of betrayal. He slowly poisons peopleââ¬â¢s thoughts, creating ideas in their heads without risking himself. Iago is capable of anything, not even the brave soldier Othello is safe from this villain. Othello holds Iago to be his closest friend and advisor. He believes Iago to be a person, ââ¬Å"of exceeding honest, who knows all qualities with learned spirit of human dealingsâ⬠. Yes, he does know about human dealings, but he is not the honest man he appears to be. He uses Othelloââ¬â¢s trust in him to eventually turn Othello into a man no better than himself. Othello is introduced to us in the first scene of the play in a negative light, when Iago and Rodrigo refer to him using derogatory terms such as, ââ¬Å"The Moorâ⬠, ââ¬Å"the thick lipsâ⬠, ââ¬Å"an old black ramâ⬠and ââ¬Å"a Barbary horseâ⬠. Othello may be an outcast in Venice due to the color of his skin; however, he is a highly respected soldier. He is extremely skilled in his field and a loyal man; therefore, valuable to the state. Due to this, we soon learn of Othello as the noble man he is. Othello, however, has the ââ¬Å"tragic flawâ⬠. It is the internal imperfection in a hero that brings him down. His downfall becomes his own doing; he is no longer the victim of fate. The prejudice of those around him destroyed him, and they believed that, ââ¬Å"A black man is an unattractive creature, not quite human, and unworthy of loveâ⬠. Thinking this made him unable to believe that Desdemona could truly love him. This is why he believes Iago so easily when he convinces him Desdemona has had an affair. Othello betrays his wife by believing Iagoââ¬â¢s word over hers, this then leads him to his ultimate betrayal when he kills her at the end of the play. At this point he also shows his loyalty to her by killing himself, stating that he canââ¬â¢t live without her. The man we see at the end of the play is not the loyal man we meet in the beginning. Othello has let the ââ¬Å"green eyes monster of jealousyâ⬠turn him from a loyal soldier to a betrayer just like Iago. Desdemona is a lady of spirit and intelligence; she is the most direct, honest and loyal character of the play. She only betrays people to those to who she is loyal. Desdemona is a lady of few words, yet she makes sure every word counts to get her point across. In Desdemonaââ¬â¢s eyes, Othello is the hero of many exciting and dangerous adventures; he is the orphan who needs love. These are the reasons Desdemona had fallen in love with Othello, despite all the nasty remarks from fellow Venetian citizens. Her marriage has brought her position and happiness, so much that she finds it unbearable to think that her husband has turned against her. This numbness lasts until she sees that he actually intends to kill her. She then puts up a defense, insisting on her loyalty and innocence. In despair of losing his love, she still defends him from consequences of his actions, but he is past seeing the truth: that she has committed herself to his love, and without it she cannot live. Othello ends up killing his wife, in spite of her loyalty toward him till the very end. By the end of the play, all characters have lost their loyalty to each other from what Iago as done to make them feel betrayed. Desdemona is left lifeless in her room, Iago kills his wife Emilia, as she reveals that Desdemona has been falsely accused of adultery, and Othello kills himself rather than living with what he has done. Iago is the only survivor by the end of the play, which further justifies his intelligence. All the characters have reached their downfall and Iago is finally pleased. He has completed the ultimate betrayal. With over 4,000 stores in the United States and Canada, Sears has grown from its humble beginnings. Sears is a leader in apparel, home appliances, home, lawn and garden, tools, automotive repair, maintenance, and electronics. Sears also provides home service, serving 11 million service calls yearly. Richard Sears founded Sears as a mail order company and it grew to be one of the largest retailers. He opened the first department store in Chicago in 1925. Sears found success and by 1928 three more stores had opened. Now Sears employs 249,000 employees and it has grown quickly. In 2005, Sears merged with K-Mart and has helped both evolve and the merger proved to be both successful and positive. Although they have faced challenges along the way they have been able to gain a large market share because of their product mix, quality services, products, and solutions. Sears has many unique attributes that make it a place that people want to shop. Despite their great accomplishment and striving to become one the largest and most competitive retailers, Sears is facing several key issues. Sears must reevaluate their internal and external environment in order to implement the changes and solutions necessary to get Sears back to where it needs to be. This has definitely been key to their success because they are able to tailor their products to their customers needs using an integrated cost leadership/differentiation strategy. Sear is competing in a very competitive industry and if they follow through with their differentiated strategy they will continue to improve. Sears was able to pursue low cost and provide differentiation to their customers. Rosa Corporate Financial Position Sears financial position is currently improving. They are dealing with not only a let down on their fourth quarter losses but the sales have decreased as well in both their department stores and Kmart unit. To deal with their losses they are in the process of selling 11 stores to make up for their finances which has made their stocks go up at 19% (MarketWatch, 2012). If they sell these properties they could earn around $270 million in proceeds. It could go either way though since when sales decrease selling assets may not be the right way to bring in growth in the future. Also if they follow their plan of moving Sears Hometown and Outlet stores they could bring in between $400 million to $500 million of proceeds during the third fiscal quarter (SHLD: Nasdaq, 2012). Sears net income has dropped continually year after year from $235. M to a mere $133. 0m. One reason being is the percentage of sales has been more focused on the SGA (Sales General Administration) costs which has made it go from 23. 69% to 24. 09% (SHLD:Nasdaq GS, 2012). Core Competency The main core competency would have to be in there customer service. They offer great service to their customers which has gave them a comp etitive advantage against competitors. They use this to differentiate themselves from competition. They have built up a good customer base. They make sure they have their best associates available for customers especially through peak hours. I was not sure if this would go in the demographics section I thought it might flow better under strategy. I can certainly add more to this section as well, if any of you have any thoughts/suggestions. Thanks! Currently, worldwide demographic trajectories show that the fastest growing age group is people over the age of 60. As this age demographic continues to grow, younger populations are projected to decrease at the same rate. The under 15 age group is currently 26% of the global population, which will decrease to 20% by 2050. (Market Potential of Maturing Customers) This will drastically change business strategies in the future, as younger generations are target less marketing becomes more adult-focused. With an increasing older population, this will create additional buying power and opportunities for the retail market. Currently, individuals over the age of fifty own 80% of the U. S. financial assets and have half of the discretionary income needed for retail spending. Additionally, worldwide consumers over 60 years older are projected to spend $15 trillion by the end of the decade, which is a massive increase over the $8 trillion recently spent by this age demographic in 2010. (The Market Potential of Maturing Consumers) By focusing on this age demographic, it may provide great growth opportunities for Sears in the future. Changes in target age demographics will also change the dynamic of shopping. Mature consumers are likely to spend more time in-store, looking for a quality shopping experience. This will likely change the dynamic of retail service, store layouts, products, and prices. Sears and its competitors may become more focused on limited, high-quality products at low prices, rather than unlimited, low-quality, low-priced products. With these changes, there will also likely be a shift in marketing strategies, customer service focus, and product designs. These literary elements include: point of view, theme, style, plot, mood/tone, setting and characters. Point of view establishes how the reader sees the story. Lukens (2003, p 168) describes this type of story-telling as one where the reader is able to live, act, feel and think the conflict as the protagonist experiences it and tells it. Fine uses first-person point of view effectively throughout the novel as the reader shares the opinions and feelings of the narrator, Kitty Killin, one of the main characters. Although scarcely more than a child, Kitty appears to be a trustworthy and likeable narrator as she is intelligent, articulate and perceptive. She often appears wiser and more insightful than the adults in the novel. As a result of this we find ourselves sharing her views. Even though Kitty is quite harsh towards Gerald, we agree with her assessment of Gerald as a political Neanderthal (Fine, 1989, p 28) and understand why she states that, After that horrible, horrible row with Mum I absolutely hated him. (Fine, 1989, p 35) Later in the novel when Kittys feelings towards Gerald change, as she wonders if she hadnt been a bit unfair to poor old Gerald Faulkner, deciding so early on that he was the worst thing to have happened to our household since Dad packed his boxes and went off to Berwick upon Tweed....(Fine 1989, p 128) we also modify our views. The personal, chatty style of the novels first person narration, accompanied by simple sentence structure also influence the way we respond. Kittys informal conversational style draws us into her world. We feel as though we are the good friend she is confiding in when she reveals her innermost feelings, for example, when she tells us It suddenly occurred to me that part of the reason I couldnt s... Verb conjugation refers to the process of changing a verb form to provide information about the action being performed. The form of the verb can give us some idea about who is performing the action, when the action is being performed, and the relation of the verb to other parts of the sentence. To better understand the concept of conjugation in Spanish, lets look at some conjugation forms in English and compare them with some Spanish forms. In the examples below, the English verbs are explained first, followed by the corresponding Spanish forms. If youre a beginner, dont worry for now about what terms like present tense, auxiliary verb and indicative mean. If you cant understand what they refer to by the examples given, you will learn them in your later studies. This lesson isnt intended to be an exhaustive analysis of the subject, but rather just enough that you can grasp the concept of how conjugation works. Infinitive To talk is the infinitive form of the verb in English. It is the basic form of the verb, by itself conveying no information about the verb action. It can be used as a noun, as in To talk in public is difficult. (Some grammarians classify talk by itself as the infinitive). The same things are true of Spanish infinitives; they convey no information about the verb action, and they can be used as nouns. Infinitives in Spanish always end in -ar, -er or -ir. The verb for to talk is hablar. Present-tense indicative verbs I talk, you talk, he talks, she talks, we talk, they talk. In English, an s: yo hablo, I talk; tà º hablas, you (singular) talk; à ©l habla, he talks; ella habla, she talks; nosotros hablamos, we talk; ellos hablan, they talk. In many cases the verb form gives enough information that it isnt necessary to indicate with a subject noun or pronoun who is performing the action. Example: canto, I sing. Future-tense indicative I will talk, you will talk, he will talk, we will talk, they will talk. In English, the future tense is formed by using the auxiliary verb will. For the future tense, Spanish uses a set of verb endings that indicate who is performing the action as well as indicate that it is happening in the future. Examples: hablarà ©, I will speak; hablars, you (singular) will speak; à ©l hablar, he will speak; hablaremos, we will speak; hablarn, they will speak. Preterite (a type of past tense) I talked, you talked, he talked, we talked, they talked. In English, the simple past tense usually is formed by adding s: hablà ©, I talked; hablaste, you (singular) talked; hablà ³, she talked; hablamos, we talked; hablaron, they talked. Present perfect (another type of past tense) I have talked, you have talked, he has talked, we have talked, they have talked. In English, the present perfect is formed by using the present tense of to have and adding a participle, which usually ends in s: he hablado, I have spoken; à ©l ha hablado, he has spoken. The gerund and progressive tenses I am talking, you are talking, she is talking, we are talking, they are talking. English forms a gerund by adding s: estoy hablando, I am talking; estuvo hablando, he was talking. Subjunctive mood If I were rich ... If that be the case ... English sometimes uses the subjunctive mood to indicate something that is hypothetical or contrary to fact. Distinctive forms for the subjunctive mood, although they used to be somewhat common, are nearly absent from modern English conversation.Spanish also uses a subjunctive mood, but it is far more common than in English. Going into details about its use is beyond the scope of this lesson, but it is usually used in dependent clauses. Example: In Quiero que ella hable (I want her to talk, or, literally, I want that she talk.), hable is in the subjunctive mood. Commands (imperative mood) Talk. English has a simple command form based on an unconjugated form of the verb. To give a command, you simply use the infinitive without the to.Spanish has both formal and familiar requests that are indicated by verb endings. Examples: hable (usted), habla (tà º), (you) talk. In some circumstances, such as in recipes, the infinitive can also function as a type of comand. Other verb forms I could talk, I would talk, I could have talked, I will have talked, I was talking, I will be talking. English uses several auxiliary verbs to convey a sense of time for a verbs action.Spanish uses the verb haber and/or a variety of endings to convey a similar sense of time. Most learning Spanish as a second language learn these forms at an intermediate level. Summary As you can see, the verb forms are much more extensive in Spanish than they are in English. Complicating things is that the most common verbs are usuallyà irregular, as they are in English (I go, but I went, and I see, but I saw). The important thing to keep in mind is that Spanish usually uses endings to more fully convey the nature of the action, while English is much more likely to use auxiliary verbs and other sentence components. For one, having thought ahead of the possible scenarios with that and what I would most likely feel about each of them, I am rather afraid of acquiring much trouble in coping with that kind of future Ellsberg insists in his sphere of change and investments. Perhaps we need not be upset with the way he perceives how economic conflicts, particularly the issues on unemployment, ought to be taken care of in the light of modifying an aspect of educational system so as to snap out rigidity in the curriculum. Maybe it is through this curricular flexibility that we can opt to find hope and r ealize that exploring beyond the conventional academic realms enables studying individuals to learn the remarkable key to economic potentials and thereby succeed with the targeted growth in professional goals. This is all fine and to some extent, relieving to know, but just because we are in dire necessity of rectifying certain directions with the traditional approach does not have to mean we must abolish proper education altogether and become entrepreneurs whether or not we are inclined to be. What Ellsbergââ¬â¢s paradigm appears to lack in understanding is that in truth, people by nature are free wanderers seeking true knowledge despite socio-political weather and economic conditions. Regardless of age and period, history has made us observe how indispensable an asset critical thinking is for the well-being of mankind as citizenry and as an entire nation. There can be no critical or creative thinking without valuable learning and there can be no valuable learning without an ins titution that serves a systematic way of educating people especially the youth. We must not forget that our capacity to think with the utmost sensibility is generated by our unconscious embrace of discipline and teachings in school. No matter how much we admit on not having a choice but to deal with academic tasks that take up considerable time and energy from us, at some point later, wherever we are or howsoever we come to be, a spur of wisdom pops to us and renders us capable of drawing inexplicable insights. It may be a little difficult to justify such statement without actual encounter yet certainly, a natural wonder of sound intellect is not something that Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, or Paul Allen could afford to impart to an individual who is after a deeper sense of fulfillment in life. Across all its production facilities throughout the world, Toyota has been known to raise the bar for maintaining quality and efficiency in a consistent fashion thereby bringing in a sense of excellence into manufacturing, procedures and product development. The result of this management strategy has been its steady rise into amassing a market share and revenue margin to such an extent that saw it making a larger profit than every other major automaker in addition to gaining the respect, admiration and praise of every business leader and management expert around the world (Jeffrey Liker, 2004). The ââ¬ËToyota wayââ¬â¢ is a management philosophy that revolves around a set of management principles followed by Toyota that are known to have contributed to the enhancement of its reputation the world over in terms of reliability and quality. These management principles are collectively used under the ââ¬ËToyota production systemââ¬â¢ also known as ââ¬ËLean productionââ¬â¢ (Michael Hoseus, 2007). The purpose of such a production system is aimed at improving the speed with which business processes are executed, provide more quality in the product or service, reduce the cost of operation and management and achieve all this irrespective of the industry where such a management system has been adopted. The Toyota Production System is one of the foundational principles which is a part of the corporate culture within the Toyota group. Indeed, the application of the programme will completely change how people in the continent deal with pollution issues. One reason for this change is fact that most of pollution control measures would be done at the grassroots level as opposed to the traditional model of having measures develop and implemented at national and continental level. In explaining benefits of the programme, the paper is divided into five sections, each of which addresses a specific benefit. I. Creation of Responsibility Culture Decentralisation of solution to pollution issues in EU will lead to situation where individuals at the local level take responsibility for pollution problems in their respective localities. In this regard, it would be possible to develop measures that in line with local demands. This is because members of local community understand bets what could be ailing their environment. In addition, having an understanding that thereââ¬â¢ll never be outside help will create a culture of responsibility among locals. This could be achieved through preventative measures ensuring that pollution is avoided in the first place, or even minimise effects minimal pollution that might occur. Individual communities and households will that start depending on themselves in matter pertaining to controlling pollutions. This is because they will understand that solutions would only come from local efforts. This factor has the benefit of cultivating competition between communities, because they would have been equalised under the programme. Such competition has the potential of leading to less pollution as communities try to out do each other on the ones that are more prosperous in terms of being pollution free. All this would lead to increasingly pollution free communities facilitated by residents themselves. By implementing the programme, individual communities and countries would not have anyone to blame for the status of their environmentââ¬â¢s pollution levels. The involvement of people shall be a boon to stakeholder initiatives directed at reducing pollution. This is because people and groups shall feel freer in dealing with issues that have for many years been preserves of governmental organisations. In addition, stakeholder groups that have been pushing for individual efforts in the protection of environment in localities will now start becoming active. It has to be understood that localised stakeholder groups help individuals in societies to come together to develop initiatives that lead to better communities. Fact that the EU Fifth Action Program will provide them with a voice is indeed of great importance. In addition, individuals that are not in a position to participate in stakeholder groups will be free to develop their own mechanisms to control pollution in their own neighbourhoods. This can even be doe at the family level, where members of the same family join hands in protecting their small environment from pollution. Doing this in several private properties enable the creation of pollution free neighbourhoods. Fact that all this would be done through initiatives developed at local levels is something to be desired, because, as discussed later in the paper, policymakers at national and regional level would be able to concentrate on other pressing matters. Other than leading to productivity in the protection of protecting environment at local level, the programme is also a vital tool of education member of public that it is possible to make changes in their communities without depending too much on the European Union. People in the region will further understand that they have power to make changes. At the end, the mentality that successful measures can only be achieved through intervention of national and regional authorities will be demolished completely. This will lead to the genesis if self dependency in solving pressing issues at local levels without rushing to authorities for help. II. End Paternalism Application of the program in pollution control will also help members of public understand the role of European Union in their day-to-day lives. At it currently happens, members of the public in the region might tend to think that EU exists to solve problems like pollution. In this regard, the people will have to understand that EUââ¬â¢s environmental mechanisms are developed to help member countries harmonise their frameworks. In other words, member countries come together and help develop best frameworks to deal with environmental issues; it is up to the countries and their citizens implement these mechanisms and ensure of they are working. Fact that paternalism has become popular in most European countries could be leading to mentality that EU exists to improve lives of member country citizens. The application this program may help in the process of disseminating that mentality completely. In this regard, people will stop looking for top to bottom solutions in their problems and thus developing bottom to top solutions. In addition, leaders at the local level would feel empowered to lead their congregation in ways that would directly benefit the local community. This new process of solution finding would be good because it has the capabilities of developing preventative measures in the first place. The localisation of decision making processes would also help communities adapt to changes that get effected in the process implementing policy changes. This is a great move from the traditional frameworks that has tasked national governments with responsibilities of helping community members at the lowest level adapt to policy changes. In the new model, it shall be up to local leaders and authorities to help the community. This has positive gains because people have easy access to leadership that would help them in the process. Having the leaders being located close to the people will also improve passage of information between stakeholders, and with it deliver the desired message to the people. As mentioned earlier, the localisation of decision making and policy implementation would lead to competition between communities has the advantage of resulting to greater efficiency. The comparison of performance between communities would help in understanding best practices in the localities would help the areas performing poorly to copy from best performers. This copying from the best would help in the implementation of pollution policies, because each locality would take best practices and tailor them in accordance to local demands, which would be a shift from the traditional model of having one size fits all mechanisms developed at regional and national levels.
